I have been a DC fan since day 1 of the league and something I have always wondered is why do we have 3 stripes across the chest of our strip? I know that Adididas has been our one and only supplier and of course they are the brand with 3 stripes. So I guess my question is this, do we have 3 stripes because Adidas designed it and thus it reflects the company logo? Or does it stand for something significant about the club? Like maybe the three communities around it (DC, Northern VA and MD). I mean lets say that in 2 years Nike takes over as official supplier, are they going to leave the adidas looking stripes on the uniform? I would think not. So then where do we go? I have always hoped for hoops...like the barbarian rugby club, but I guess we will just have to cross that bridge when we come to it.

Again just a question. I apologize if this has been discussed already but I have been gone a lot in the past few years so I have not been able to post very regularly.

Each stripe represents one championship. But what's up with those stars?

    ;)

Not really. I always thought it was an adidas thing.

Don't know. I'm guessing it's just Adidas' brand of DCU jerseys. Although then again other teams around the world with Adidas jerseys don't have the stripes. Maybe its just a tradition now for DCU jerseys.

I know the District of Columbia flag has a red and white scheme composed of a couple of stars and a couple stripes, but I'm not sure how many of each, or if the kit designers looked at that or anything.

The District Flag, and also that similar part of the DC jersey, come straight from George Washington's family coat-of-arms. I can't remember where I read it, but I do remember reading it somewhere, probably the W-P.

The DC flag is two red stripes and three red stars on a background of white.

DC United's uniform didn't have three stars on it until (IIRC) the '01 or '02 season.

I have a related question. Who is the official jersey sponsor for DC United?

The sponsor was Mastercard for the first half of DCU's existance. No sponsor since.

and I'm surprised we don't have one. I'll go out on a limb - RadioShack will step up by the end of the year on this one.
They may not know it yet though!

    JUST A GUESS!

Who cares...it's a uniform, made by adidas! the three stars are for the league titles and the stripes happen to be on just about every adidas product!

    White (with three red stars)
    Red
    White
    Red
    White

You could look at it as three very white broad stripes (one with the stars) on a field of red... ;)

The adidas stripes have been such an integral part of our uniforms that I've sometimes wondered what would happen if we switched from adidas to some other supplier like Nike.

    Not really related, but...

How pissed is Nike right now? They pay Freddy $1M and can't use him yet, but Addias gets "free" Freddy advertising every time he shows up in a DCU kit. When I heard we were getting new kits this year (after I got over being pissed about finally picking up some of last years shirts :() I half expected the team to switch to Nike due to the Adu relation.

More on topic, there have been a few special Jerseys that do not have the 3 stripes. My all time favorite Jersey is one such. It's black front/back with white/red sides. I "believe" that that was the second special kit. IIRC the first was a god-awful red and blue which I don't think had the stripes either.

Rumor was MLS was asking $10,000 a game to be DC's shirt sponsor.

    And that was before Adu.

I bet the asking price has tripled since then...
