We're standing at 1-1 in the ACC, down in the second division. Maybe we can pick up some wins this week and move up with the only two conference schools with winning records, Wake Forest and NC State.

Our opponents? On Tuesday we'll be playing FSU down in Tallahassee, a 7 pm game. FSU stands 7-3-3 and 1-1-1, and is ranked at #28 in the current Jones listing, after losing in OT to Wake over the weekend. On Saturday afternoon, in a 5 pm home game at Fetzer, we'll meet Virginia, which stands 6-4-2, 0-2-0, after losing to Maryland up in College Park. Jones had the Cavaliers at #18 going into that match.

With the humbling loss to State Thursday night and an OT win over Clemson on Saturday, I'd say Tar Heel fans are ready for anything.

I think and hope that the game is at 4 p.m. That's what the schedules says at the tarheel blue site. :)

    Time of Virginia game

The ACC site has it listed as a 2 pm game; the Virginia site as a 5 pm game; and the UNC site as a 4 pm game. I'll get a clarification from the UNC soccer office tomorrow morning.

    UNC FSU on livestats

The game tomorrow night is available online via livestats.

    http://seminoles.ocsn.com/livestats/w-soccer

No waiting for that phone call from a loved one in Tallahassee.

That URL currently shows the Wake FSU game. I trust it will show Carolina as promised. If not, would that be another FSU first?

Match coming up pretty soon now. Here's a link to the preview on the Seminoles' site.

"This is probably the toughest match-up of the year, any year for that matter," said head coach Patrick Baker. "They are so talented. Not only is their starting 11 a who's who of women's soccer but their first five or six players off the bench are National and Regional team players. It's a great opportunity for us every year to test ourselves against the greatest program in NCAA women's soccer history."

    UNC FSU halftime

UNC 1 FSU 0 at half. Seems UNC has the better of it. Lots of substitutions, suspect Anson is trying to keep the tired troops fresh. Both teams played OT saturday, UNC has the luxury of the deep bench. Haven't seen Chalupny yet.

Second have will be interesting as two tired teams see who wants it most.

Ok, they have #4 as Steadman again. I thought Fletch was wearing that number because of a jersey mixup. Has she permanently taken it?

The FSU-Duke match was pretty close. It probably doesn't bode well for Carolina against Duke if FSU stays close throughout. (Ha, ha, using some ancient, mystic sports logic here...)

I don't know if you can trust this match tracker. They have Leigh Blomgren being subbed out and then scoring a goal:

[22:38] NC substitution: Lindsay Tarpley for Leigh Blomgren.
[24:28] FS substitution: Marion Cagle for Meredith Jones.
[24:28] NC substitution: Mary McDowell for Maggie Tomecka.
[24:28] FS substitution: Leah Gallegos for Cindy Schofield.
[24:28] FS substitution: Shannon Coe for Ashlee Fontes.
[24:28] FS substitution: Teresa Rivera for Meredith Jones.
    Foul on FS.
[26:54] NC substitution: Sara Randolph for Carmen Watley.
[27:18] Corner kick by NC Elizabeth Ball.
[27:35] GOAL by NC Leigh Blomgren {shot from top of box}, Assist by Elizabeth Ball, goal number 1 for season.

    5-1 Tar Heel victory

Way to go, team. Two goals by Annie Morrell. Way to go, Annie. Glad to see Leigh Blomgren get a score. Alyssa scored and so did Mary Mac. Too bad we gave up that goal in the final two minutes. I guess people noticed that Jenni started in goal but was subbed out in the 15th minute. I don't think Chalupny played.

    Anne Morrell and Leigh Blomgren

Hooray for our whole team, going down to Tallahassee and laying one on the Seminoles, but we could especially say hooray for two individuals, Annie Morrell, who scored two goals in four minutes in the second half to up the score from 1-0 to 3-0, and Leigh Blomgren, becoming one of our most reliable subs, who scored her first goal at UNC. And I decided to illustrate this post with a pair of GoCourage's photos.

I hope the doctor's did the right surgery on the right girl. You can really screw up a knee by fusing it.

    Virginia, the mystery team

    (Good one, TarheelFan02. LOL.)

(Also, I should say, seriously, we all hope that Jordan and Laura both have an easy time of it and a fast recuperation.)

As for Virginia, the mystery team, maybe you have forgotten that at the beginning of the season, Virginia was expected to be one of the nation's best teams. I had forgotten. In the preseason polls, the Cavs were ranked #6 by the NSCAA and #4 by Soccer Buzz. They had eight starters returning from a team that had made the NCAA quarters last year and they had a group of freshmen coming in that was ranked as one of the top five in the nation, led by feared striker Kristin Weiss. One of their returning veterans was/is Lindsay Gusick, who was co-freshman of the year last season.

So why aren't they one of the nation's best teams? Maybe one of the reasons is Lori Lindsey, who ISN'T returning for another season and represents a serious loss. She was a two-time ACC Player of the Year and is now with the WUSA's San Diego Spirit. Also, I understand that Weiss was injured early in the season and hasn't been playing. Is this right? And are there other contributing factors that anyone knows about? Please help us out if you can.

Whatever the reasons, UVa stands unranked in the NSCAA and Soccer America polls, 7-4-2 overall, and 0-2 in the ACC. Of course, N.C. State was unranked in the polls when they met us last week. But they're ranked now.

    UVA contest

Klee, I agree. With all that talent and the anticipation of beating UNC, this team isn't going to have the look of an unranked team. Gillian (?) is also an excellent playmaker out of the back and played very impressively as a freshman in last year's ACC tournament. Weiss is on the mend (re: Carol Lindsay) and has perhaps been saving herself for the Heels. During the recruiting process, UNC was not on her list of favorites...hmmm....

I thought that Carol Lindsay said that K Weiss had torn her ACL-if so she won't be playing anytime soon.

Hello All (and Hello Lee/Klee) (P.S. Lee - I just got your P.M.s - sorry!!)

I thought I'd throw my two cents in.

Lee, you are absolutely correct, this UVA team is a mystery to me also! Loads of talent, underachieving. Yet, still very, very young, regardless of last year's achievements. I think perhaps Lori's absence in the middle has something to do with it [why would I not say that!! : )].

Kareena - you are also correct - Kristin Weiss is the one with the torn ACL (a big blow as she appeared to be doing quite well when she went out). Lindsey Gusick (leading scorer from last year) is the one who was on the mend from an ankle injury, and missed quite a few games. In the last game, against JMU - her first full game since the injury, she made her presence known with two goals in a 7-3 UVA win.

IMHO I believe maturity and gelling with each other is what this team needs. Defense, distribution and finishing also need to come together at the same time. And CONSISTENCY would help!

However, when you think about it, what the heck do I know!!! I'm just a fan!!

I just hope we can pull an "NC State"!!

Thanks Lee for contacting me. Even though Lori's not playing there anymore, I still love this rivalry. Our time shall come!

P.S.S. Actually, Lori will be at the game, 'cause she's a "volunteer assistant." If you see her tell her her Mom said Hi! : )

    Carol
