UMD will play host to the University of Wisconsin tomorrow night (3-17-03) in the second Spring exhibition game for both teams. Wisconisn lost the VCU 1-0 on Saturday and UMD drew with the Richmond Kickers 2-2. On a side note Wisiconsin's coach, Jeff Rohman, was Sacho Ciroski's assistant at UMD for seven years prior to the 2002 season. The game time is 7pm and open to the public.
Terps win 2-0 Maryland beat a scappy Wisconsin team 2-0 last night at Ludwig field. UMD got goals from AJ Herrera and Abe Thompson. The Terps split their squad into two units again with each playing a half. Sumed Ibraham didn't play due to a minor injury he received in Saturday's scrimage with the Kickers. He was replaced by a rejunvenated AJ Herrera who looks poised to reclaim a starting spot with a goal in each game so far and terrific overall play. I thought he was Maryland's best player Saturday. Abe Thompson didn't play with the normal starters but looked dangerous in the second and got a late goal. Hopefully the nonstarting snub will light a fire under him an get him back to being the Abe of his freshman year. Their were a few shaky moments in goal but the wet conditions may have contributed to some of that. The defending looked strong from the back four and some possession was actually observed starting from the composure and touch of the backline. The Terps have Spring Break next week and will swing back into action on April 5 at home with game against GW and ODU.
Thanks for the report! How did Wisconsin look besides "scrappy"? Did anyone stand out besides the goal scorers?
Oh yeah, Wisconsin In fairness to Wisconsin they only showed up with 13 players and one of the parents told me two were recent Spring walk-ons. They really swarmed to the ball and played with high pressure most of the match which says something about their fitness. Unfortunately two players got injuried in the second half and they were basically out of bullets against a superior UMD team. I really liked their #10 who played up top. I had a copy of their 2002 roster but #10 was a senior so I don't know who the guy was. He was 6"3' and around 180-190 pounds with good ability to hold the ball and good pace to run at players. He had one near break away but Goodson and Stamler sandwiched him in the box and Wisconin people went nuts for a PK. That was probably their best chance to score. The shots were 17-8 in UMD's favor and as I mentioned before Maryland used their second unit in the last period. We played the Richmond Kicker reserves on Saturday and beat them 2-1. I thought Wisconsin was better side and would have likely beaten them as well.
