There has been a training accident in Czechia that injured 9 Czech soldiers. the Czech military spokesperson is saying there is no indication of sabotage, but that hasn't stopped pro-Ukrainian accounts from claiming this is an escalation of Russia's sabotage efforts in Europe.

The purge in Russia Ministry of Defense continues! Putin has directly fired all of the remaining Shoigu deputies and has installed his niece as a Deputy Defense minister.

Saw an interesting post from a Russian milblogger about this area of the front. He claims that there is a massive drinking problem here, as there are no restrictions on how much booze Russian soldiers can buy and enterprising civilians have taken to supplying them as much as they want.

Bad wars mean soldiers get drunk and wars involving Russian soldiers mean soldiers get drunk, so for a Russian to complain about this here means the problem must be especially bad.

As a proud Westerner, I say we promote capitalism and support these booze peddlers as much as possible.

More recent reporting indicates that some, but not most have surrendered at this time. They are still getting hit with guided bombs.

Speaking of guided bombs, 5 more Russian guided bombs accidentally fell somewhere in the very Russian Belgorod Oblast today.

Sounds like Buryats (a minor Altaic ethnicity within Russia) talking in their language and cursing in Russian.

They may be better used by Russian soldiers looking to surrender and not be shot by Russians in the process.

German manufacturer Rheinmetall is going to start putting Skyranger anti-air turrets on Leopard 1 tanks to help Ukraine with their drone problem. The Skyranger is a radar assisted anti-air system that has a 30mm autocannon and a small missile system that can hold 2 Stingers or other short range anti-air missiles.

Related, I would not be surprised if we start to see laser anti-drone systems being deployed by Ukraine at some point. Western weapons manufacturers are starting to produce them and they will need a test environment to see how well they work.

I have seen these tanks referred to as "Frankestein tanks" in the media. I assume this is not their official designation, is it?

Maybe? LOL. But "Frankenstien" is a common description for the repurposing of hulls and random turrets, but it is usually used for adhoc combinations. I'm not sure I would call this a Frankenstein modification tho. Skyrangers are produced as just a turret and are intended to be added to hulls based on the customers needs. As an example, Germany has it on their Boxer IFV, Hungary has it on their Lynx, etc. The only thing "Frankenstein" about this is that the Leopard 1 wasn't designed for this, but its not the first modification to the Leopard hull beyond your standard tank.

Switzerland's military industrial complex seems to have convinced the Swiss government to allow the use of equipment in Ukraine. While Switzerland's vehicles aren't really used outside of Switzerland, they do manufacturer a lot of high quality parts that are used in a lot of hardware produced by other European countries. As an example, Leopard tanks use Swiss optics and other electronics, the anti-air missiles used by Gepards have Swiss components (or are produced in Switzerland), etc.

regunning hulls is an ancient german tradition

for instance in WW II the panzer III and IV hulls were the platform for multiple other systems.

it makes sense if you have a lot of available hulls

The thing about the Gepard, similarly a anti-aircraft turret placed on a Leopard 1 chassis, is that its ancient radar gets very confused by targets near the ground so it's useless against low flying helicopters and low flying drones. It's why they were all withdrawn from German service and were available to be sent to Ukraine a long time ago. They do very well against the higher-flying Shaheds sent against Ukrainian cities, but Ukraine needs something that can work near the front lines.

I wonder if they could upgrade the Gepard's radar to make it effective against drones. Ukraine really needs something that can shoot down Russian recon drones. Ukraine is currently using FPVs and dudes with guns in the backseat of prop planes to shoot them down. Radar controlled AA guns would be amazing. Nothing cheaper than a few dozen bullets to vaporize a drone.

One of the drone operators working Kharkiv has updated on the status in that front. Russia is actively bombing the area with glide bombs and are moving new units into the pocket to replenish the destroyed units that have been operating in the area. He notes that Russia is no longer doing armored assaults in Kharkiv area. It's mostly infantry advances. They are still destroying tanks and apcs, but its mostly just ones parked.

    https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1803089127388184736.html?utm_campaign=topunroll

What's amazing is that the Kharkiv offensive was supposed to be a way to draw Ukrainian forces away from the eastern front, but it is now causing Russia to use reserve units that were intended for the eastern front.

And, again, included in the thread is another example of a Russian unit suffering 80%-90% casualties. In one assault attempt, Russians sent 17 paratroopers, 4 were KIA, and 10 were WIA.

Not that big of a surprise, tbh. India has been bankrolling development of Russian equipment for decades and to find out that the systems are completely crap has to be pretty demoralizing for their military. With rising tensions with China, India is in dire need of modernizing their military and it is pretty obvious that Russian hardware is not up to the task.

LOL. North Korea letting Russia know where they are in their relationship. :) The Russian delegation arrived at the summit location first and a North Korean guard entered and kicked them out because Kim had to enter the room first.

They do, but they are copies of Soviet tech and their manufacturing is not as good as China's.

  25. They got boat loads of people with extraordinary brains. Use them to get to the next/required level to face China.
