not really a surprise, but it sure would suck.

It would be hard for Berbs to turn down playing for Manu, no matter how happy he is at Spurs. Can you imagine him playing off Ronaldo and Rooney?

You surely mean "to turn down playing for Man U.. again". Right?

This has been discussed and dismissed so many times that it's not funny anymore.

His agent, his manager, himself, his team mates have all said he is staying and is happy at Spurs and in London. Jol even said the board wouldn't sanction selling him even if Jol wanted to.

What else can anyone say to stop the press printing their shite?

Spurs are rich, and are NOT a selling team. Where is the benefit to selling him to a team in the same league? the money spurs have is enough to strengthen the side without selling.

Yes, yes, Carrick. Wanted to go, next year would have been his last under contract and when he was sold it was the peak of his value before his contract time started to push it down again. Berbatov has THREE more years on his deal.

The piece is crap, it's speculation based on other speculation. Bale from January, Hargreaves from all season and Berbatov from the last few weeks.

    Ignore it all.

Two things about Carrick, 1) he's from the north originally, so it's not surprising that he might want to move back, and Manchester United are a tremendous club. 2) I was very adamant about it before, if we sell a star player we're going to have strong repercussions (sp?) and eventually players like Lennon will be the target of long-lasting big-money campaigns to bring them to the richest clubs. That means we're just going to have to deal with the Berbatov's and Lennon's being constantly linked to United and Chelsea ... and if Liverpool gets that influx of cash, possibly them too.

As for Berbatov, the reason he came to Spurs was because we had a long-standing desire to bring him over. United came in at the last minute and tried to prise him away, and the offer was appealing, but he wanted to go where he knew he'd be wanted and featured. If United keep up their efforts to bring him, that's sure to sway his head, but it's secondary to how he does at Spurs. If Spurs make his life enjoyable and are ambitious enough and successful enough to break into the Champions Leauge spots, I kind of doubt he'll leave. But if we don't get Champions League games before his contract expires, I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave to United.

At the moment, the best thing we can do is win.

Berbs will still be here next season at least, regardless of who wants him. Just because the club sells one player in Carrick when it suited them does not mean they will sell every time. It's the usual games, mainly perpuated by fans of other teams who are envious of a quality player.

Look, we all saw the garbage the press was printing every day when Johnnie Jackson had that magical season. We just gotta roll with it.

Honestly, Torres is 27 million or less. Berbatov isn't being sold for any less as he is just as good and proven within the Premiership. So until Torres and Villa are gone, I'm not worried one iota about losing him.

I'm still learning the intracies(s) of the EPL...will Spurs try to redo his contract to keep him happy at WHL? That is what they do over here in the states. They would give him a raise and try to resign him for a longer period.

I know he says he is happy, but he is also playing at the top of his game, and I believe the reality is that he has to feel some pull to play for one of the big squads, and the other reality is that that ain't us at the moment.

I'm not trying to get anyone riled up, just asking the question.

They have been negotiating a new contract for a while now. Rumor has it that he will become the highest paid player at WHL.

Things work much differently in football than any of the American sports. First there is none of this "can be cut" at anytime that makes NFL contracts anything but contracts. And there are multiple leagues, so there is no monopoly of employment. If you don't like your contract in the NBA, what are you going to do? And there is no Baseball union, somehow (unbelievably) dictating value.

What you need to know about contracts is this:

with 2 years left to go, a team is forced to sell players if they don't resign because it's the point where they will get max value on the transfer market. This really applies to the top players and this is why we could sell Carrick last year way over his value. If we had Carrick this year and he hadn't signed, we would probably get less than half of what we bilked United for.

With one year left, it means that the player will probably leave on a free (although it doesn't always happen) and if you sell, you will be getting much less than market value, so the team has decide to get one year out of the player or money.

Once out of contract, he can sign anywhere for free. Such as when Sol ********ed us.

Anything over 2 years means the club has the upper-hand, as we do with Berbatov now. But if we flaunt it, he is unlikely to restructure his contract.

Also he can put in a request for transfer at anytime. While uncommon, this is what Chimbonda did last year. I doubt we would ever see Berbatov do such a thing as he is way too classy.

thanks for the info on the contracts...

I hope he is playing at WHL for a long, long time. That goal yesterday was pure class, and the assist to Defoe was also fantastic.

His agent was on 5live radio tonight. Hard to understand him, i'm afraid, but he said a few things:

+ No contact from any Premiership clubs
+ any contact would be to Spurs and not to the agent (tapping up is illegal)
+ very, very good season & found the right place with Tottenham
+ could score 25-30 goals next season
+ fully expect to be at Spurs next season, there is no reason to move clubs
+ great rapport with the fans
+ last week it was chelsea, this week it's man utd - ie, just paper talk
    + very happy with spurs

So, there. The presenter was fishing for something to hang a story on but i don't think he got much.

When someone makes a thread about Berbatov leaving can we bump my post please? :)

I keep reading articles where berbs is linked with a move to man u; even after the interview with berbs' agent stating the contrary. I personally feel that dimitar is happy at spurs. obviously we will need to give him more money to make sure he stays, but I think that dimitar has the vision and class to see that spurs ain't no joke. granted we aren't man u or chelsea, but we are a team on the rise and I hope that he sees he will be instrumental in that rise. one of his heroes is alan shearer, a man who stood by newcastle through thick and thin, even when other high class teams were begging for him. I hope that berbs will take a page from alan's playbook and know that the work he puts in at spurs will be more rewarding than just jumping ship to another team to earn a quick piece of silverware.
