Except that Mata, like Greenwood, likes to play on the right and cut in on his left foot whereas Rashford likes to play on the left and cut in on his right foot.

Perhaps the sub was more about getting Mata on the field than either Greenwood or Rashford off. I can actually see that in this game. It's not a counterattacking game for us and instead begs for someone with Mata's ability to deliver a killer pass in a tight space.

i don't know that Mata likes to play there more than there is nowhere else to fit him in recent years

Please god, somebody make a gif of the ref's interaction with Wind there. BWAHAHAHA.

If anyone is inclined, it was at the award of the penalty. He told a couple players off and Wind came sprinting up to him and he was like 'talk to the hand' and never made eye contact. Felt like a kid vs his mom at the ggrocery store.

How did we not score there? It was harder to not score.

Fair point, though I always feel like he prefers that or the center. Generally wingers who play on the side with their dominant foot are looking to stay wide and utilize their speed. Those who play on the side opposite their dominant foot are looking to cut in, which requires less speed (but of course a strong overlapping wing back).

Rashford really needs to add more finesse to his game.

i'd have thought some of Martial's would have rubbed off by now

Martial should have a hat trick and two assists

if Mata could shoot first time we'd be 3 and clear by now.

i really don't get it. neither chance required much power

He just doesn't seem to have a chip in him. It's his biggest failing tbh. Martial is a deadly finisher (though he should have scored three tonight) because he could do anything.

Fred tried today at the 6 but Matic is just different gravy in that position and it showed again today.

true but i wasn't even getting at that.

just placement or taking an extra touch to set himself to finish. he seems to default to drilling it through the keeper sometimes

matic has made a difference. seems insane that being able to carry the ball forward for 10 or 20 yards before releasing to our playmakers would actually make a difference but fred and mctom can't do it.

Honestly, with the way McTominay and Fred have performed in that position in particular since the restart, if Ole doesn't have the club address that need this summer, it would be a reckless decision. Especially with this coming season being very taxing with all the games coming thick and fast, one after the other.
Matic needs to be limited to a game/wk at this point to be at his very best.

FT: 1-0. Did it! Wasn't pretty but we're in the semi finals.

With the big mins some logged today in this weather, fatigue will be a concern for sure...
