    After a large scale pole orchestrated by UEFA's official website (uefa.com) in which the world voted for the top 11 players for last year including best coach:

    ===================Buffon

    =========== Paolo Ferrierra=== A. Nesta=== P.Maldini=== R.Carlos

    ==========Figo=====Beckham(HAHA!)=======Nedved

    =====================Zidane

    =============Nistelrooy========Henry

    Ferriera in a way was not a surprise to me as he has given Porto incredible service defensivley. As for Beckham..well..you can talk about that amongst yourselves.

    lol..I forgot Zidane..maybe because he's always there. His stardom is somewhat implied these days

    P.S Not to forget that the chosen coach was Porto's coach Jose Marinho.

    I should've figured. 3 midfielders from Real huh? Crazy rich bastards. I know it's cool to bash Beckham now-a-days, but he has a skill set that isn't matched by many other players. He can do some things for a team that are just great, especially for a team with the attacking talent of Real. Maybe he doesn't deservea best 11 nomination, but I don't know if I'd say that it's laughable.

    'Los Galacticos' selected on power of names not quality in 2003.

    Thuram should be the best right back.
    Figo was horrible last season (missed penalty against Juve in semi's) should not have been there.
    Beckham steped into the Davids position. Beckham played his entire season at Man Utd on the right side of midfield (better choice there than Figo). Roberto Carlos cannot be the best left wing back and should be omitted in his place shoudl be Gianluca Zambrotta (magical season).
    Roberto Carlos plays more like a left midfielder and in which case nobody had a better year than Pavel Nedved.
    But Nedved should be considered an attacking midfielded whcih would have pitted him against Zidane. Zidane had an of year in 2003 and thus up against Nedved would lose. Real Madrid players were selected plainly on the basis of bignames.

    Agreed. Zambrotta really impressed this previous season. A complete work horse with very flexible positioning.

    Which season are we really talking about here?If people are talking about 2002/2003, the football season that ended in May 2003 then some of the points made about Zidane,Beckham,Figo may be valid.

    However, if we are speaking about the on-going season 2003/2004 then you need to think again.

    The cut-off point - where is it?

    Still if we are referring to calender year 2003 we must also be clear about that.If we are here...then both Zidane and Beckham have a legimate claim to being in the team.Beckham has been at the top of official ratings in Spain since his move there and Zidane has been his usual inspirational self since the start of the season.

    You people tend to forget that Real Madrid won La Liga last year and reached the semis of the champions league.Roberto Carlos was an intergral part of these efforts and to play down his contribution in either is casuistry at its worst!!!

    And no mention about Ronaldo...this boy almost single-handedly delivered the league title to Real and mind you he was not fully fit.His goals were a big factor. He currently has 14 goals in 19 outings(i.e. in the league).

    Don't forget too that Real went through the first phase of the CL (03/04) unbeaten and at the top of their group with some of the most stirring displays that very very few teams are capable of.The drubbing of Marseille(4-2) comes very much to mind and also the (7-2) thrashing of Valladolid on 13 Sept 2003.The actors in these orchestra were none other than Zidane,Figo,Roberto Carlos and Beckham, and of course also Ronnie and Raul.

    But then this was a vote by football fans whose loyalties would tend to find their way into the process.Voting of any sort is inherently biased and I am not surprised that the Uefa Team came out the way it is.

    May be, but did you really see Paulo Ferreira consistently throughout the season in question?Did you watch the Portugese League as much as you did the Italian and did you follow Ferreira's exploits both in the league and the Uefa Cup?Until you answer these questions you would hardly be in the position to judge whether he or Thuram was better.

    Figo was horrible last season (missed penalty against Juve in semi's) should not have been there.

    May be.....

    Roberto Carlos cannot be the best left wing back and should be omitted in his place should be Gianluca Zambrotta (magical season).

    Well he is!

    But Nedved should be considered an attacking midfielded whcih would have pitted him against Zidane. Zidane had an of year in 2003 and thus up against Nedved would lose.

    Zidane DID NOThave an off year..I am quite amazed at people's propensity to forget.See my earlier comments on my above post.

    Real Madrid players were selected plainly on the basis of bignames.

    May be with regard to Figo but the others have actually earned the recognition the voters gave them.

    Firstly I don't want to be a knob, but maybe is one word.

    Moving on, I have to say that where are the likes of Roy Keane, O'Shea or Lampard who have all been outstanding this year. Also from Germany what about the likes of Hinkel and Hleb?

    To be fair its not a bad line-up, but the midfield is a bit dodgy.

  10. Smart Alec!!!!!!!!!!!

    Stick to the substantive parts!This hardly adds value to what you wanted to say...

    Thuram should have been the right back. I was very disappointed to see that Paul Scholes only recieved 7.7% of the votes for attacking midfielder. If Zidane is the best, which he still is, Scholes is easily number 2 on that list, not Deco.

    Ya but Deco's team won the UEFA Cup? I also think that his contributions were crucial to their victory.

    Paul Scholes had a magnificant year: scored over 20 goals and lead Manchester United to the Championship, which is a greater acomplishment than winning the UEFA Cup, a tournament for mid-table teams.

    Dude..you have to understand that its the performances under the UEFA Federations jurisdiction that counts. Do I think that Deco is better than Scholes? Hell no! But I would disagree that Deco was not a better player in Europe.

    And to answer jokstein's question: "which season does the poll refer to", that would be the 2002/2003 season sir. Which would make the majority of your comments redundant i.e. the ones that regard Beckham and to some length Figo.

    No its for the calender year 2003, otherwise they would have brought it out in June at the end of the season.
