UEFA U-19 Championships – First Round

As the host team, reigning champion Germany automatically goes to the third round.

Eight other teams are already qualified for the second round because of their rankings (based on calculations concerning the last 2 editions of the competition): Norway, Spain, France, Italy, Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

The 7 group winners qualify, along with the ‘best’ runner-up. So far, six of those have been determined: Belgium, Finland, Switzerland, the Republic of Ireland, England, and the Ukraine.

The winner of group 6 will be decided when Russia and Scotland meet on the 16th. Both have 6 points and both have won their games by aggregate scores of 6-1.

From what I’ve heard, the ‘best’ runner-up will also be determined by that game. Right now, Slovakia will get that position if the second place team in group 6 ends up with less than 7 points and a goal difference less than plus six. If that is true, then Scotland and Russia would both go through with a tie. If the game isn’t a tie, then the loser would have a goal difference less than six and that would put Slovakia through.

Russia and Scotland both have goal differences of +5, after two games. If their head-to-head match is a draw, their goal differences will remain the same.

So although they would equal Slovakia's 7 points, Slovakia would have a superior (+6) goal difference.

Therefore, Slovakia has already qualified as best runner-up.

    Scotland-Russia [R]

Nothing posted at the UEFA site yet.

But according to european womens soccer Scotland defeated Russia 2-1, on goals by Suzanne Grant and Donna James. Attendance was only 50 (for some reason, the group 6 tournament was held in Bulgaria...)

So Scotland fills the final second round spot.

Israel was supposed to be the host, but the tournament was moved to Bulgaria because of "security concerns".

Israel beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in the other game.
