I'm confused. Norway are in France's group and they qualify automatically to the Olympics as hosts. I presume Norway will have to finish above Austria and Portugal on the table anyway to reach the semi-final stage. And Norway will need to win that semi-final as well to qualify for Paris 2024, right?

Only the 4 group winners of League A reach the Nations League Finals. The third placed team of the Nations League Finals qualifies for the Olympic Games if France is the winner of A2 and then finish the Nations League Finals as winner or runner-up. Norway has to win Group A2 and the Nations League Finals semi-final.

Well, I guess it's safe to say there will be no Olympic Games for Italy. :coffee: It will be quite hard to avoid relegation to League B instead.

Thanks! Well, I actually prefer this new NL set-up to the old system when poor World Cup results could deliver a double blow of missing out on the Olympics as well.

It's key to avoid relegation because the following season is the Euro qualifiers and the top two teams from all the League A group qualify directly for the Euros, while the remaining 7 slots are awarded via long winded play-off route.

based on adding up the world rankings (for what it's worth), A4 is the toughest group with a sum of 46.
    A1 with 54, A2 with 56 and A3 with 62.

What is the point of the Nation's League? It's another NT tournament? Why?

Dutch National Team coach Jonker on the Nation's League:
"Any sane person can see that the playing calendar is too full."

He worries--as any sane person would--about more injuries.

The Nations League strikes me as completely superfluous, unnecessary and too much.

I'm more optimistic as it will replace a lot of boring and one-sided qualifiers.

It serves as a qualifying competition for the 2024 Olympics and at the same time the Euro 2025 qualifiers. It replaces the old qualifying set-up. I don’t think the total amount of fixtures on the calendar will increase, but teams will play most of the games against same strength opposition instead. There will be fewer blow-out wins and less dates for friendlies.

National associations asked UEFA to reform the competition as it was boring and not competitive enough.

FIFA calendar has exactly the same number of games and international windows than in previous seasons. There will be a lot less friendlies and more competitive games.

Ah: This makes some sense, thanks. I didn't realize the matches were a substitute for the current qualifying setups. We'll get some good matches, to be sure--but without the easier qualifying matches, the starters/top players will play more than they would have otherwise. I mean, this essentially seems to turn qualifying into a pseudo-Euro/WC/Olympics tournament before the real events. It will be more demanding on the players, as I say, and will mean coaches probably won't use their bench players as much, given the high level of qualifying competition.

To be clear the format is like this for the next four years, and then UEFA will evaluate if the system needs to change or not.

2023/24 Nations League/ Paris Olympics qualifiers
    2024/25 Euro 2025 qualifiers
    2025/26 Nations League
    2026/27 World Cup 2027 qualifiers.

I'm looking forward to see all the game schedules with kickoff time and stadiums where the games will be played, I'm thinking of going to a few games.

I also think it's ridiculous that the Euro qualifiers will now be just another Nations League.
