So were you coaching young girls? Were you already rooting for the mostly athletic kick & run style, or were you also teaching them some passing/possession soccer?
it's all kick n run baby! but also being an basketball coach coach I was very into full court press & mark up defence(mostly coached u12 & under/small sided fields in soccer as well), which now we can tell is where woso's headed
My first memory was watching Iceland play against England at Laugardalsvöllur in October 1994 with my grandmother. Iceland than had the chance be to one of the four teams to play in the Euros finals tournament but England proved too strong and won both matches 2-1. I remember not being very impressed but my grandmother quickly educated me (she was awesome). Nontheless, it wasn't until 2004 that I really started paying attention when my team Valur finally began to win titles again in the women's league and was the most dominant team in Iceland until 2011. Then in 2009 our national team made it to the Euros finals tournament in Finland (the men would not compete in their first finals tournament until 2016) and despite three losses performed well in two of the three matches. After that I started also to follow the progress of the sport elsewhere and it is great to know that there are communities out there like this one that appreciates the hard work done by these athletes day in and day out.
For me, it was when Norway won the 1995 WWC. In 1999, I went to the "Taste of Chicago" food festival then walked to Soldier Field in Chicago and watched Norway beat Japan 4-0 and Sweden beat I think Ghana in front of about 35,000 fans! It set a record for a non-USA ladies soccer crowd. I remember it started raining during the Norway match. Fond memory!
never mind Casey Stoney's hybred version, even Japan was high pressing a lot at the last SBC & then we saw just last week how the Italians were being killed by the Danes midfield press
well tbh it was Japan who first introduced effective gegenpressing in woso - at WWC in Germany. One of the reasons why they won there.
it well could of been, I barely watched the 2011 tourney. It’s just the 2013 Euros & onward seemed heavily influenced by the men’s styles, especially Spain’s & Germany’s possession minded versions(especially since they won the WC) which meant playing the ball from the back for total ball control. But in woso, that’s often easier said than done & perhaps that’s the reason the US & Japan dominated the women’s game for the last decade? But now with the latest men’s WC final between two very athletic squads(Croatia & France) who often looked like they preferred the other team to have the ball, so they can disposes & quickly counter, perhaps this is where woso will be heading too? That’s what I felt at least from watching last week’s Denmark/Italy game
Iceland squad chosen for the matches against Slovakia and Hungary. Sadly 19 year old Karólína Lea Vilhjálmsdóttir, who has been impressive in the last three games for Iceland is out due to knee injury and is not expected back until after 2 or 3 months. The good news are that Dagný Brynjarsdóttir is back. Denmark will be without the 4 players who ply their traded in the FA WSL as they have not received an exemption to quarantine after coming back from international duty. No Pernille Harder, Nicoline Sørensen, Rikke Sevecke and Stine Larsen. As they have already qualified, the damage is not as severe as it could have been.
On the other hand, this could be problematic for my country women. If Italy wins Denmark, that could possibly result in Iceland having to go to the playoffs, depending on other results, of course. Other bad news for Iceland is that Dagný Brynjarsdóttir will not be available for the two crucial games against Hungary and Slovakia. This is nail biting stuff.
UEFA got a write-up with a recap of who can still qualify. Qualified: Denmark, England (hosts), Germany, Netherlands (holders), Norway, Sweden Confirmed in top two of group: Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Russia, Switzerland Can also still qualify: Belarus, Finland, Iceland, Northern Ireland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, Slovakia, Ukraine, Wales
I posted this last month but didn’t get a reply to my question. Her name is Sava & she’s just been gobbled up by Wolfsburg for an 100K euros transfer fee hope I get a little ‘finders fee’ lol
Two matches today. I of course will be watching my country women play against Slovakia on the Icelandic state television. Last time the two teams met Iceland had a difficult time breaking down the Slovakian defense and in the end won by only a single goal from Elín Metta Jensen on the 65th minute. Iceland needs to do much better tonight as they are chasing countries like Belgium when it comes to goal difference. I expect Iceland to be very attacking minded today and even taking some risks. Hopefully there will be a stream available. The winning goal from last year.
Wolfsburg will pay you the finders fee when someone with the name Sava signs a contract. Her name is Sofie Svava. Interesting is that German Wiki thinks that she is a defender, English Wiki thinks she is a midfielder and Danish Wiki thinks she is an attacker.
Sava sounds better; it's closer to 'savage'; she's an left, outside mid or at least in the only game I ever seen her play, versus Italy where she 'savagely' ripped the ball out of any Italian who came her way. If you believe the trusty soccerway, here was where she(#23) played Italy vs. Denmark - 27 October 2020 - Women Soccerway just don't get why another big, physical player since they got Egen allready but guessing their missing Gunnarsdottir
Poland NT has 6 players tested positive today while on camp. With 8 NT players already unavailable due to virus, quarantine or injuries PZPN asked UEFA for reschedule of 1st December's match against Spain.
Sofie Svava is a left-sided player. Could play full-back, wing-back and may be also winger. I guess she is signed as back-up for Wedemayer and Rolfö at Wolfsburg.
Ekstraliga's an amateur league without even a strategic sponsor. Polish FA - de facto owner - didn't invested enough money for coordinated testing program to be introduced beforehand and pushed this responsibility on to clubs. Well-to -do clubs get by. Others aren't as fortunate. Two clubs barely made license quotas before this season start and budgets of two others already struggling amids pandemic. Then we have NT camp where players mix...
Iceland starting lineup against Slovakia. 4-4-2 system. I haven't seen this system for the Icelandic women's team in a long time. More likely that this is a 4-4-1-1 system with Jensen dropping down into the number 10 position. here's the link to Germany vs Greece, but don't know if it's geo blocked yet Women's football: Germany - Greece live in the stream - ZDFmediathek was hoping coach MVT would use some of her newbies vs the weak Greece side, but not so. Don't think we can believe the trusty soccerway with the formation lineups; they got Maro at central striker/Bundesliga leading scorer Freigang at FB/Dabritz at central back(seriously), but then MVT been an ardent fan of th Jorgie Low Horror Show, so possibly?
