United weren’t set up to have the ball. Put Mainoo in city’s team and he has completely different stats.
Yeah have to say I agree even as a City fan. Think in a possession based team you will see different results. I like him and not as down on him as AJ is but that’s his opinion and respect it. He’s only just turned 19 and still pretty raw and should only get better and working with issues like out of possession can be worked on.
I think he will give us a lot of composure and passing through the lines and being progressive rather than side to side stuff we usually get from our centre midfielders. Not saying I wouldn’t mind also seeing how Wharton does if he’s given an opportunity.
No different than Bruno Fernandes or Amrabat I expect. It’s the way United set up, just to provide some context. Everyone is so polarised about Mainoo though they’ve already made up their mind and just bend numbers to fit their narrative. he provided a press resistance and ability on the ball in deeper areas that isn’t found in the other options. Compare Gallagher and Mainoos performances for England and Mainoo has clearly offered more, even if there’s only been a few appearances to go by. if Mainoo didn’t play for Man United there would be far less people complaining about him playing for England
Kobbie vs Manchester City. pic.twitter.com/ddSUBz7JM6— 𝙈𝙞𝙯𝙪. (@mizuravage) May 25, 2024 I really think this guy is an exceptional footballer. One thing that sticks out in these clips is how much more mobile he looks when he's not having to cover unreasonable distances. Several occasions here he gets separation from his opponent with the ball at his feet quite comfortably. I don't think his speed is an issue at all.
Mainly ball retention and progressing the ball through midfield. I dread having to watch Gallagher receive the ball and turn in those positions.
I didn’t see him once on the TV but Southgate and Holland were at the FA cup final which has lead to an article in the Daily Mail saying it might well have secured Mainoo as a starter against Serbia.
BBC player ratings Manchester City 2, Walker - 5.02 4, Foden - 4.69 6, Stones - 4.66 Grealish, Carson and Lewis unused. Manchester United 1, Mainoo - 8.38 5, Wan - Bissaka - 7.61 12, Rashford - 6.99 15, Mount - 6.20
I like Rooney as a pundit. He tells it straight but unlike Keane he does it with a smile on his face,
I do wonder if that will suit him better than his attempts to make it as manager. I can see him in a few years ending up as a full time pundit.
Doesn't actually look that impressive from that clip. I would expect a decent player to make those same moves. A couple of really good passes and one dribble? He got away with what looked a penalty against Haaland as well.
I don't know where you got them stats from but I've just see a clip of him making at least 1 tackle. People need to stop using only stats to judge players. Mainoo has something that stats don't tell you and that is class.
I wouldn't expect a decent player to make even half of those moves. A good player, sure, but that's what Mainoo is. Most English midfielders in a large portion of those situations would have sent the ball straight back towards their own defence in places where Mainoo was patient or found a way to progress the ball under pressure.

Stats have to be used alongside watching g the game Mainoo always made himself available and played some extremely nice passes through a press and on a counter at times really good performance vs a more experienced midfield and a good goal I would rather he is in the squad and Wharton, than some of the old guard which is what Gareth has seemingly done
He doesn't make a tackle in that comp. The two sliding tackles were given as fouls for going through the back of of his man, one a yellow card. A pernickety continental ref would've given him a second yellow so he needs to be more cool headed. See also the potential foul on Haaland in the box, some refs would give that. The only other possible tackle is where he buffets his player but it looks like he doesn't win the ball only pressures his man into passing back to his teammate. I also watched the match in full and while he was good in his limited moments on the ball he was ambling around a lot of the time not really getting close to the City players, hence the low defensive stats. A fair point. He does facilitate the transition of the ball through the midfield well when he's under pressure. A little reminiscent of Dembele the Spurs player of a few years ago.
I think mainoo can become a Bellingham style player, he has the motor to join the attack and the skill set to start a move from deep no reason he can’t work on his game like Jude and become a physical and technical monster
A special moment for Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. ❤️#BBCFACup #FACupFinal pic.twitter.com/YdOP4ANFhc— Match of the Day (@BBCMOTD) May 25, 2024 In all honesty, it's almost impossible to tell just how good Mainoo is right now in this current United set up. Hearing team mates say he's "the best in the squad and the youngest" is encouraging - but l guess the real acid test will come in the next month or so with England. Here's hoping he comes home a superstar.
A good point. Perhaps I do project a bit of frustration onto him because of the garbage football that we play under Hag, although there were some quality counter attacking passing moves yesterday. I’m very weary of the hype though, he’ll get slaughtered if he ends up getting sent off, gives away a penalty or just plays badly. The United fans will blame the English media and fans etc for hyping him up when they’ve hyped him beyond all reason. He does seem like a really nice kid. I hope he proves me wrong and lives up to the hype.
Got a horrible feeling he'll start Gallagher. He's always looking to a Henderson type player. Don't get me wrong Gallagher is a very good player but he's an all action midfielder. We need a Wharton mainoo type player
Fair enough about the tackles. But he clearly has a touch of class about him. People need to remember the main stat in football is goals and he scored the winning goal in a FA Cup Final. We all have players we think are overrated. but saying it was a average performance is a bit unfair.
