Who I think he'll drop: Trafford, Quansah, Branthwaite, Jones, Mainoo and one of Eze/Maddison. Who I'd like him to drop: Trafford, Trippier, Dunk, Konsa, Maddison, Watkins. Barring one or two frustrating omissions it's a very good provisional squad that has the potential to end up being a very promising or still quite worrying final 26.
‘England manager Gareth Southgate: "I wouldn't be obsessed with where we've positioned the players. I write a list and other people put a heading on it. "I don't know where players will be cut. In another couple of weeks we will be a lot clearer on a number of issues." The official England squad annoucement lists players in positional groups. It has some interesting quirks - including Jude Bellingham as a forward and Trent Alexander-Arnold as a midfielder.’ England manager Gareth Southgate: "The key with Phil [Foden] is where he ends up, not his starting position. He's been allowed to drift for Manchester City. It's where these players arrive and where they are allowed to drift to. "We never pin these forwards to the touchline. There is this freedom. You want Phil in those central areas, as you want with two or three others."
England manager Gareth Southgate: "[Eric Dier's] played very well for Bayern and I know they are very happy with him. He's just behind the guys we've selected. We watch every game and he has played well in the Champions League as well. We've assessed all of that."
Southgate on squad balance If we picked tomorrow we might end up taking a dozen defenders because we have so many [injury] questions, and we obviously don’t want to do that. Hopefully in time things become clearer. I also think you can take too many forwards. With forwards you’ve got to give them love and make them feel special, and if you have too many you cannot do that. I would have liked it to be have been more decisive and cleaner. hinting here he is not taking 26.,
England manager Gareth Southgate: "With this group, some of them might not be for this summer, but for the future as well. We've evolved as a team in every tournament. There are now a lot of changes from the last Euros, and from Qatar as well." England manager Gareth Southgate on whether he called Ben White: "No. As far as I am aware he is unavailable."
Yeah, talking of Shaw not being fully fit. Shame, a fit Shaw is still one of the fastest and experienced backs
If you incude Bellingham as a midfielder the average age of the midfield is 22. Btw good to see Jones and Wharton in.
Chilwell is injured, Hall probably needs more experience 1v1 and I don't think Mitchell has ever been good enough on the ball. The look of the squad makes me think it's going to be a more possession based style, with one of the fullbacks going into midfield. That way you can just use a LCB at LB and not have to worry about the injury pile-up so much. It's also something like we saw in the last qualification game.
Man Utd fans on twitter all season " Rashford's shit why isn't trying harder...etc" Also Man Utd fans on Twitter " Why isn't Rashford in the England squad and (insert name here) is...etc"
Nowhere. Mind you, Fireburn was dead cert Hendo would start, Wharton would be left out, Rashford in etc-etc.
https://x.com/david_reed/status/1792913201178288452?s=61 BBC - ‘It is worth noting one other omission from this England squad, Levi Colwill. It was widely reported (including by ourselves) that the Chelsea defender would be selected by Southgate today, however the 21-year-old has missed out. It means the injured Luke Shaw is the only specialist left back in the 33-man squad.’
Whe he talks about maybe taking too many forwards. Feels like he might take less and say he doesn’t need any more forwards.
5 of the U21 Euro Final winners have made the provisional squad (Trafford, Branthwaite, Jones, Palmer, Gordon). 7 if you include qualification participants (Gallagher and Guehi). Then you already have three who have at least been called up to the latest U21 campaign (Quansah, Mainoo, Wharton).
I probably wouldn't have taken Rashford on balance but Utd fans are all fuming because they think it's a double standard with Grealish which it is a little bit. Both have had poor seasons but Rashford has a better history with England and his potential X Factor is probably more worth a gamble on than Grealish's possession retention and defensive work, which Gordon and even Foden on that role offer a bit of. Neither should go imo but there is a bit of a double standard, however this is excluding their overall effect on the group off the pitch which could be a factor. Although I doubt Rashford is anything other than well liked.
