This is not a good parallel at all. It was after the absolute nadir of 2004 that the Germans started to completely rebuild their national team, not after 2008. In 2006 Löw already was there, only then with Klinsmann, that was the first step, and the 2008 performance was a particular success with that squad. That's why nothing had to be changed, only the new generation of 2009 U21 European Championship winners had to be integrated.

Yeah, also quite ridiculous that he got used for that amount of time during this tournament! Not sure why he wasn’t used more!
Southgate is not the biggest fan. Obviously Carsley or Howe would be. Does he fit a Potter team? Potter’s teams were known for having high XG but not a lot of actual goals. But that might because of the players rather than manager,
If anyone I think we missed Grealish. His press resistance would have come in handy. On an unrelated note, I do think our ability from set pieces was rather lacking this tournament. Whenever we won a corner it was rarely something to be excited about.
Harry Kane on whether he played through injury: "No, it’s not time to talk about personal things. The tournament plays out in different situations. I don’t know but judging from that it might suggest he was playing through an injury ( like everyone thinks ) and he knows it. I mean he could just come out and say he has no injury problems but he didn’t. Or have I misread that as when he says No, is that no he wasn’t injured or just No it’s not the time to talk about personal issues?
If I were him I'd be saying I was carrying an injury regardless. Otherwise it's all pinned on him being rubbish.
He could but then he will be accused of being selfish and putting his own glory before the benefit of the team unless Southgate insisted on him starting every game despite being half fit.
Man this sucks. Yet another opportunity wasted. Very depressing. But. If England can keep getting to finals. Eventually we will win one.

If that’s True it rules him out being Captain if much of the squad don’t like him. Plus he refused to do the press conferences and the press will not accept a captain doing that.
TBF these are all from the torygraph. A paper not known for it's football knowledge or even interest. As for the arguments themselves, keeping Southgate just seems like cowardice because you don't want to make a decision about who to replace him with. Richards and Shearer are just pimping 'their guy', though Pep would probably do a good job, (although quite why he'd take it is another matter), and Howe would at least bring some fresh thinking. Lineker's probably also correct in thinking Klopp would do well. Personally I think a foreign manager isn't a problem one way or the other. Whoever we get is going to have to be brave.
I think the headline is a bit misleading though about him having no friends. If you read the context it says he’s close with TAA but doesn’t have very many strong connections within the squad which doesn’t equate to being not liked or?
It’s easier for an English manager to be brave as they won’t fade the same level of initial media hostility a foreigner would. The media still define the perception of the manager particularly pre first tournament
In one of the Lions Dens on You Tube the players have talked about Jude and TAA being close but in a way that feels like they saying we not actually close with him
Yeah I get that he might not be close to many players but it still doesn’t mean they dislike him. I can think of friends I’m not that close to but I still get on with them just fine.
EXCL: ITV to offer Gareth Southgate a role if the England boss steps down https://t.co/IqXhkNPhoL— Mike Keegan (@MikeKeegan_DM) July 15, 2024 I don’t think him being a pundit straight away on his successor will work.
It's not a shock that you're seeing these pieces on Jude now. This country has always had an utter disdain for people with explicit self-confidence and combined with the fact that Jude doesn't speak to the print media and massage their own petty egos it was never gonna be long before they came for him. I remember two senior England players (think it was Walker and Trippier) in one of the 2022 Lion's Den episodes joking that they'd never heard Jude speak and that he was extremely quiet. I also remember at the Euros in 2021 Bellingham said that he mostly just speaks to Reece James. I think it's likely that in private he isn't the biggest and loudest personality and doesn't necessarily deeply connect with everyone and anyone like some people do, certainly doesn't mean he doesn't like anyone or isn't liked by others. He's close to Trent and Reece James but he was also very close to Henderson and both of Maddison and Grealish. Four of those were absent from this squad so just because he hasn't forged new close friendships in the space of a few weeks doesn't mean there are problems between him and other players.
