Some sad news this evening as Tommy Banks has died. RIP. We are saddened to hear that Tommy Banks has passed away aged 94.Tommy won six international caps and represented the #ThreeLions at the 1958 @FIFAWorldCup. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends. pic.twitter.com/dHrchsuFvy— England (@England) June 13, 2024 Bryan Douglas and Colin McDonald are last two members of the 1958 squad still with us.
Gallagher or Wharton for me. Winning opener is massive. If Saka isn't up to i'd rather have Bowen rather than Palmer on right. Especially if Foden is on left as think we'd see Kane, Bellingham and Palmer and Foden all taking up middle positions.
Assuming all are fit I'd probably go Pickford Walker Stones Dunk Trippier Wharton Rice Saka Bellingham Gordon Kane If Guehi plays I'd want Gomez in at lb.
I know there are still living players from 1954 world cup, would guess maybe none from 1950. Not specifically English.
I don't recall anyone on here mention it either, but it happens all the time and it has been for a bit. Only the other day they were debating it on the Overlap after a fan suggested it.
I fear Serbia more than Denmark. Maguire would have been ideal for this game. I just can't see ghuei or stones handling mitrovic or vlahovic. They have 4 or 5 very good players. Denmark are just a hard working team but lack any real quality.
I’ve barely seen it mentioned let alone all the time, I guess the Overlap was also in the context of his current fitness issues though (unless it was recorded weeks ago), there are very good alternatives. Many news outlets were floating Harry Kane being dropped in the last Euros it happens to all players.
I've only seen the clip and not the full episode but it seems fairly clear the context was around getting both Foden and Jude in the team. Ferdinand has had the debate on his podcast at some stage, and it's a fairly ongoing debate on Twitter that came about when people regularly posted pics of their preferred XIs on Twitter and Saka was missing from a large portion of them. I do think Saka is a very underappreciated player. The discourse around the debate between him and Foden (which is a nonsense and tiresome comparison) has exposed to me that a lot of people really, really underrate him.
there is reason Chelsea finished lower in the table Arsenal press and defend as a team Saka works hard both sides of the ball and gets doubled by slot of left backs when he goes one on one he has free license
Anyone else have their lowest expectations for a long time? maybe it was the friendlies or the lack of a left back and Southgate’s o session playing a right back in midfield
I think there's an argument for Arsenal becoming a bit more expansive at times. The defensive work Saka does exceeds that of pretty much every other winger I've seen at the top level currently, at least from the eye test. It's crazy he puts up the attacking numbers he does. It's inevitably going to happen at some stage but I'd like to see him given more access to the half spaces and central areas. I think the role Olise currently plays for Palace would be perfect for him.
If that is true why drop Grealish for Foden? Grealish has made decisive interventions for England in the past. Foden from my recollection hasn't.
Nah, there's too much quality in this squad to start getting all pessimistic. We've seen some horribly unconvincing performances right throughout the season (Australia and Malta most notably) it's true, but this is where it counts. Southgate's had 10 days on the training pitch now to bed in some new combinations and fashion together a cohesive unit - and that Iceland defeat should have focused the mind. Keep the faith.
Saka has won the past two England player of the year awards which is voted for by the fans. Foden and Jude have been better than him this season though.
Fair point. If Southgate has dropped Grealish and Rashford because he wants wide men who can lead the press and pin the opposition back further up the field, then starting Phil Foden on the left doesn't particularly fit the masterplan either.
Yeah, I can't remember too many players more broadly popular than Saka has been for England thus far. I'd actually say he gets an easier time of it than basically any regulars in the squad. I mean Kane is a fully fledged England legend and by far our best striker and will have people questioning his place after a couple of average games.
Not pessimist but realistic. I'm hoping to go all the way, we're good enough but my head Says France. Which I don't understand because apart from centreback we're as good as them and better than them in other positions
People might question Kane's big game contributions relative to his status in the game but who ever really suggests he should be dropped for England? Foden has also had a significantly easier time of things than Saka has.

I don't know who Guerin Sportivo is or who he played for but he really should know that Maguire isn't in the squad!
Plenty of people questioned Kanes place in the side after the slow start to the last Euro's. Foden gets away with poor performances generally also, but I'm not really getting what hard time Saka gets? He's basically a lock in the vast majority of peoples teams, the only real questions about him are his current fitness rather than his ability.
