If you're ever being held hostage and you want to send a coded message, spell Guéhi correctly and we'll all know something's up. Police at your door in 10 minutes flat.
There was one game specifically where Fulham beat Brighton 2-1 and Fulham's two goals came from Mitrovic and Dunk. I get the theory behind putting Dunk on Mitrovic stylistically though. It's probably what's gonna happen if Stones isn't fit so let's cross our fingers.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2024/06/12/john-stones-sickness-bug-doubt-england-vs-serbia/ Rooney worried by England's youthful squad at Euro 2024 By Mike McGrath in Blankenhain Spoiler (Move your mouse to the spoiler area to reveal the content) Show Spoiler Hide Spoiler Wayne Rooney fears England's inexperience may harm their chances at Euro 2024 and insists Trent Alexander-Arnold should not be “anywhere near the middle of the pitch”. The former England captain compared Gareth Southgate’s youthful squad to his 2004 tournament, when he was the youngest but surrounded by experienced internationals. Southgate’s squad has 169 fewer caps than the 26-man squad that went to the World Cup. Alexander-Arnold is an option for Southgate in midfield alongside Declan Rice, with youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton also in the squad along with Conor Gallagher. “I think he’ll go with Trent. I think he’s probably the most gifted player with the ball at his feet we’ve got. Defensively, he’s all over the place. He can’t defend. I wouldn’t have him anywhere near the middle of the pitch. And I love Trent,” said Rooney on the Overlap podcast with former England team-mate Gary Neville. Southgate dropped Jordan Henderson from his squad and also left behind Marcus Rashford, who has 60 caps, while Raheem Sterling has not been in his plans all season. Harry Maguire is also missing through injury, John Stones through illness, while Luke Shaw misses the start of the tournament “On the backline, there’s not many caps between the players,” said Rooney. “I had it when I first signed for Manchester United, you get to finals and ends of tournaments, we’re looking at the lads that have been there and won trophies. “They keep you calm and get you through it. That’s my worry for England. I think they’ll breeze through the group stages but when they come up against good teams that are going to be a real threat to them, I think that lack of experience might harm us. “Where now you’ve got Guehi, you’ve got Konsa, Mainoo, Wharton - the amount of players that have barely played, Cole Palmer, Eze. So many players and what will happen naturally is they will probably stick together and then when it starts getting tough, they’ll be talking, going, ‘What do we do?’” John Stones was quarantined on Wednesday. Or alternatively say something like "I'm actually quite relaxed about Wales capping English born League One players"
I don't rate particularly Dunk and indeed i've long questioned his place in the squad but some of the wider conversation around him is getting very hyperbolic. He's not THAT bad, he's a solid premier league centre half. I'd have doubts against him against the best sides but he shouldn't be so bad he's going to crater England's chances against anyone as seems to be the current narrative. He does have an error in him for sure but he's at least genuinely good on the ball and solid in the air. Reminds me a bit of when Mings was going to be starting centre back at the last Euro's with Maguire injured, and while he had his faults the histrionics about how bad he actually was got very out of hand. That to say nothing of how their old academy players like Nelson and Smith-Rowe are kept around in career limbo without ever getting any minutes, though clearly that is on the players as well.
Depending on the line up it’s possible no players with senior tournament playing experience are on the bench at all on Sunday. When you think that at the 2022 World Cup Callum Wilson was the only player brought off the bench without tournament experience - with the two goalies, Maddison, White, Coady and Gallagher unused throughout.
John Stones due to train this morning - out of quarantine. Good news for England and Southgate.— Matt Law (@Matt_Law_DT) June 13, 2024

(The Sun) Everton defender Ben Godfrey could leave the club for free next summer after turning down a series of contract offers - AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund have already shown interest. (The Sun) Euro 2024 will not use the same stoppage-time rules enforced by FIFA and the Premier League which have regularly led to games going beyond 100 minutes. (The Times) Wayne Rooney does not believe Trent Alexander-Arnold has the discipline to be an international central midfielder. (Daily Mirror)
I agree he's a solid Premier League defender, but I still think there's enough reason to be very worried about him against Serbia if he starts. He has a history of struggling against top-end strikers and someone like Dusan Vlahovic is well above the average level of number 9s in the Premier League. I think there's also some concern about how he deals with the weight of the stage, given how he's coped when asked to step up at times this season.
With Stones back training fhe likelihood is we won’t see him starting at least. Maybe he or Konsa will come on as a sub.
Nothing convincing - but a couple of Wharton mentions from Andy Dunne and Miguel Delaney 💪 John Stones is back in training for England after missing Wednesday's session through illness📰 @johncrossmirror and @andydunnmirror are back with all the latest from the England camp#euro2024 | #football pic.twitter.com/TDL6yssjk9— Mirror Football (@MirrorFootball) June 13, 2024 https://www.independent.co.uk/sport...o-2024-preview-gareth-southgate-b2561757.html Southgate has meanwhile been going back and forth on what midfield to play. There have been suggestions Adam Wharton could go from a surprise call-up to a certain starter.
Big error in that article. Trippier has been in every tournament squad as well. Trent almost was but missed the last Euros after he get injured after it was announced. I would be shocked if Wharton started on Sunday. Trent seems the favourite followed by Gallagher then Mainoo then him.
I'm not worried about the CBs so much as the shield in front of them. Depending on Mainoo or TAA to protect the back four in transition would worry me. I quite dislike Gallagher as a footballer in general, but I wouldn't be upset to see him start. This thing about getting Rice forward needs to go away as well.
Am I the only one worried about Serbia? Their attack looks potent on paper. Tadic supplying Mitrovic. They played some neat stuff at the world cup, but suffered from trying to walk it into the goal a bit.
Leaving out Grealish will define this tournament going by these reactions by Paul Ince and Gabby Agbonlahor https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/england-euro2024-southgate-grealish-ince-33022887 https://talksport.com/football/1918231/gareth-southgate-gabby-agbonlahor-euro-2024-jack-grealish/
It's really hard to say without having seen much of them but on paper they've got quite a lot of talent. On top of the attacking talent their two young midfielders Ilic and Samardzic are meant to be very good and are both seemingly being tracked by quite a few big clubs. I've heard a few people who I know actually watch Serbia tip them to be strong in this tournament. If we were in a league season with 19 other teams of Serbia/Denmark/Slovenia quality you wouldn't worry, but in these one-off games it's much easier to zone in on opponents' strengths. Even with our problems there's no excuse for not topping this group given our talent level but you just get funny results in tournaments.
I am worried about every match. We never seem to do well when facing top strikers and all three of our group stage opponents have one.
Worried wouldn't be the word I'd use, I've said this before but all teams at this level are dangerous. In the World Cup you had teams like Wales and USA who were desperate to beat us, and before that the last Euros a quality team like Croatia, and Scotland with there biggest game in 40 years. Every group game we've played in the last 6 years has been against teams that have pose a threat, this is no different. Hopefully the boys are switched on a ready for battle, if the are we can overcome Serbia and others in our group. If not we might struggle but that's always the case.
I can see Serbia being really up for the game on Sunday and probably being too excited and end up having a player sent off. They really dislike us so could see some wild challenges heading our way and trying to wind up our players. Cool heads will be needed….
