It doesn't because referees are instructed to wait a moment or two to make the offside call to be sure. By waiting you inherently give the defender an opportunity to make a "deliberate play" on the ball. It's so silly.
So the defender is better to just leave the ball as it is without trying to play it. Lukaku was a meter behind the defense at the moment of the pass. Absurd goal.
And essentially be at the mercy of the official making the correct call. I agree it's completely absurd. I only ever got to a collegiate level of officiating but I've read the law book inside and out many times and I've never heard this bologna before.
How can you play to the whistle if you basically remove the offside situation by playing to the whistle? Should you speculate whether or not you should go for the ball? Weird
Lukaku seems to finally be finding his footing, I always maintained that in the right system with the right responsibilities he could be good but he's showing more of a range than I was thinking back then
He's always been a good player. The last 10-12 years his type of game hasn't been in vogue so he gets slagged off as a donkey.
I think his touch and decision making in particular has improved a lot in past 18 months or so. He used to need a cows field to do what he's doing with pressure.
His biggest issue for me used to be his finishing, i thought he always moved well and got himself in good scoring positions but he has taken all aspects of his game to another level this season for both club and country,
He had some good touches, he was getting hit pretty hard to, it was good to see him not shrink due to the physical nature of the play
for me it was a combination of touch, reading the play and positioning (not compensating for his poor touch), he's gotten more comfortable and that has helped a lot
