To be fair, there was contact. It was VERY slight, VERY soft, but the contact was there. And since the ref awarded a penalty, there had to be clear and obvious evidence that there was no contact for the call on the pitch to be overturned. That's how understand it, anyway. If the ref had NOT awarded a penalty it's likely VAR would not have overturned that decision, either.
Saw both contacts ... feather like. I get the logic for overturning the call .. but man, that's so not a PK.
Yeah. I mean, its pretty obvious England would have won anyway. That flight to and from Baku was really starting to weigh on the Danes. The penalty save was one of their first touches in extra time until that point.
It is interesting that Maradona is trending on Twitter now. England have cried about Maradona's hand for decades but now they are ok with that dive.
Man as a Romanian I like that the Danes are so pissed right In 2004 they Urs Meier invented a PK against us, and one goal they scored in the 94th and 36s after 4 minutes of added time and to top it off it was a handball too I hope they remember this PK like we still do 17 years later Also Demnark first goal is illegal Master Set Piece Theatre alert!Danish wall slides over and completely blocks Pickford’s view just as Damsgaard starts his approach. -T pic.twitter.com/ybPXUgHdKD— Total Soccer Show (@TotalSoccerShow) July 7, 2021
That's the first I am hearing about that rule. Since when do opposing players have to worry about the goalkeeper;s line of sight (if they are not in an offside position)?
https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-13---free-kicks Until the ball is in play all opponents must remain: at least 9.15 m (10 yds) from the ball, unless they are on their own goal line between the goalposts outside the penalty area for free kicks inside the opponents’ penalty area Where three or more defending team players form a ‘wall’, all attacking team players must remain at least 1 m (1 yd) from the ‘wall’ until the ball is in play.
BTW I am a fan of VAR and I hope it stays but Sterling PK is what I hate the most regarding VAR. Sterling was a PK because Sterling was clipped but VAR will never give you that PK They will never tell the ref look again in either cases
Shoulder to shoulder chargers which are deemed perfectly fine do way more "damage" than the contact Sterling got.
It seems that there will be spectators in Copa final (around 4000). But Covid in Brazil is still serious.
Yeah, but shoulder-to-shoulder implies the 2 players are merely fighting for space. Whereas in this case Sterling is the only one whose momentum is headed towards the ball and therefore the only one that has a chance of getting to the ball (before he was tripped). Hence, the law.
Apparently the Italian goalkeeper has NEVER conceeded more than 1 goal in a match. 32 matches with the NT. Just putting that out there.
I am staying up and going to watch Copa America final in hope of seeing Messi finally lifting a cup for Argentina. But my head tells that it will be yet another disappointment
Pele never won it. Maradona never won it. But Messi has won it. And in the stadium where he suffered his biggest heartbreak.
