That is a hard group but who knows it could be our year.

We got serbia who is a darkhorse.

The question is will Almeida or Quaresma be there or the world cup?

I assume all games will be on RTPi?

It would be great to see Portugal play in Braga durring earlier hours to show off the Stadium since the damn league only shows games at 1:30 in the morning...well close enough

    Eis a composição dos grupos:

    Grupo A:
    Portugal
    França
    Sérvia e Montenegro
    Alemanha

    Grupo B:
    Itália
    Dinamarca
    Ucrânia
    Holanda

I don't see an easy group there, both are equaly tough.

More than 3,000 tickets were sold in the 1st 5 hours they were made available in the CTT (Portuguese Post Offices). The Portugal games obviously are the most sought after specially Portugal-France. :http://www.fpf.pt/scriptnews/view/show.php?id=2576

Mods. would it be possible to rename this thread to UEFA Euro 2006 U-21 Championship Thread [R]

When I saw you post it the first time I thought it had already been changed. I didn't notice the "Euro".

    Anyway it has been done.

I was bored...and so I decided to post "my squad" to the U-21 Euro.

    From what I remember, it's a 23 man squad with 3 Gks.
So I've decided to call 2 players for each position using a 4-3-3 system as template.
Quaresma ans Viana were left aside, because there is a realistic chance (not quite the same for Moutinho, Manuel Fernandes or Hugo Almeida) for them to be called to the WC squad.

    GKs:
    Bruno Vale (FC Porto)
    Paulo Ribeiro (FC Porto)
    Daniel Fernandes (PAOK FC)

    RBs:
    Nélson Marcos (SL Benfica)
    Filipe Oliveira (Chelsea FC)

    LBs:
    José Gonçalves (Hearts FC)
    Hugo Valdir (Sporting CP)

    CBs:
    "Zé" Castro (A Académica C)
    José Semedo (Sporting CP)
    Rolando Fonseca (CF Belenenses)
    Miguel Ângelo (Sporting CP)

    DMCs:
    Raúl Meireles (FC Porto)
    Custódio Castro (SPorting CP)

    MCs:
    João Moutinho (Sporting CP)
    Manuel Fernandes (SL Benfica)

    AMRs:
    Luís "Nani" (Sporting CP)
    Davide Dias (SC Braga)

    AMLs:
    Ivanildo Cassamá (FC Porto)
    Diogo Valente (Boavista FC)

    AMCs:
    Silvestre Varela (Sporting CP)
    Danny Gomes (FC Dinamo Moskva)

    STs:
    Hugo Almeida (FC Porto)
Ricardo Vaz Te (Bolton Wanderers FC)

    How to explain my choices?
For the goalkeeper spot there isn't much competition. The 3 gks used during qualification (+friendly games) were called up.

For the RB position, 3 players were left aside (Laranjeiro, Miguel Garcia and João Pereira) due to their lack of quality when compared to Nélson and F. Oliveira.

For the LB spot, José Gonçalves was an obvious choice (he was the only LB that has given me some confidance)...and then I had a though job to choose between Valdir, Pedro Araújo and Vítor Rodrigues. Valdir got the edge due to his experiance in this level, although I rate Araújo higher...

The CBs were the harder choice. Semedo+Castro+Rolando were obvious picks...but the 4th CB was tuffer. Pedro Ribeiro and Amoreirinha aren't talented enough, and, IMO, Fontes and Morais are over-rated. I like M. Ângelo, I think he is a quality player, that Sporting should look at with more attention. So, between Morais, Fontes and Ângelo...I've decided to pick the player on loan at FC Barreirense.

The DMCs gave me no trouble. Meireles and Custódio are no match to players like Bruno Amaro (FC Penafiel) or Sérgio Organista (FC Porto).

Same goes to the MCs. No trouble at all! Although Rúben Amorim (CF Belenenses) is a quality player...and it was hard to decided between him and Davide (I picked Davide because he is capable to play on the flanks...unlike Amorim, who was another player to a overcrowded and "overtalented" center miedfield positions). Even so, Amorim is my "reserve" to the miedfield!

For the flanks the options were simple. Cristóvão (Leixões SC) eclipsed, Eliseu Santos (CF Belenenses), Paulo Sérgio and Edgar Marcelino (both of Sporting CP) aren't as good and as constant as the ones that were picked.

For the AMC position doesn't exist much competition. I like Danny skills and it is with sadness that I see him being left aside Agostinho's options. It might be a disciplinary option...
Silvestre Varela always performed nice when playing behind Hugo Almeida. No a tipical AMC (like Danny a pure nº 10)...more a "9,5".

Strikers were easy! Lourenço (Sporting CP) is over-rated...Hugo Almeida and Vaz Te all the way! Cícero Semedo (FC Dinamo Moskva) is my "reserve" striker.

If Viana is left-out of the squad for the WC, I'll give him Danny's spot.
I refuse to put the scenario of Quaresma to be left-out of the WC ;) !
