UEFA Cup - Parma, Lazio 2nd Round Draw Lazio gets Chievo-beaters Red Star Belgrade. Parma gets Wisla Krakow. Isn't that the team whose fans threw a knife onto the field, grazing - I think it was Dino Baggio - a few years back? Or was that a different Polish team? Both Italian teams have to play the first legs at home, could be a disadvantage. Parma is notorious for getting precisely the result they need on their home return legs. 1st leg Oct 31 2nd leg Nov 14
Red Star have plenty of technically gifted players, though very young. they can keep possession of the ball for long stretches, but there doesn't seem to be a true finisher amongst them Lazio are definetely superior, hope they show it on the pitch Wisla supposedly are very mediocre, but Parma obviously like to make it harder for themselves
By the way, this is indeed the same club that Parma was playing that had the knife thrown onto the field hitting D. Baggio. <dream mode on> Let's hope their fans have matured a little bit. </dream mode off>
these matches are today... Lazio going with a much different team from the Derby over the weekend...Chiesa likely to start. Mihaljovic sits out against his former team Red Star, more time to think about the missed PK...
Added an [R] to the thread title to make this official discussion thread for the results of these encounters.
scratch that, Chiesa sent home with the flu...Lopez or Corradi would likely take his spot: LAZIO (4-4-2): 1 Marchegiani, 22 Oddo, 23 Negro, 24 Couto, 6 Sorin, 26 Castroman, 28 Liverani, 4 D.Baggio, 34 Manfredini, 25 Chiesa, 21 S.Inzaghi STELLA ROSSA (3-4-2-1): 1 Randjelovic, 5 M.Dudic, 26 Vidic, 30 Lalatovic, 2 Markovic, 10 Krivokapic, 4 Mladenovic, 7 Gvozdenovic, 11 Boskovic, 16 Kovacevic, 18 Pjanovic
Parma's probable lineup vs Wisla Krakow, according to RAI Teletext: Frey Diana Bonera Ferrari Benarrivo Brighi Lamouchi Donati Nakata Mutu Bonazzoli Adriano not even on the bench, still recovering from a thigh injury. These games kick off at 2:30 (Lazio) and 3 pm (Parma) EST.
uefa.com has minute by minute updates of the Lazio game. Fiore (?) is starting in place of Chiesa - guess Mancini is hoping Simone Inzaghi can spring for one of his 4-goal flukes as the lone striker. And Peruzzi is in the nets instead of Marchegiani. Piojo Lopez, the only other forward, is on the bench, along with Red Star old boys Mihajlovic, Stankovic as well as Pancaro, Simeone, and Gottardi. Too bad Mancini can't suit up. Liverani is apparently off to a good start in a rare starting appearance. Wonder if the home fans are booing him....
1-0 to Lazio on a goal by Fiore off a cross on a free kick won by Castroman. Maybe Fiore IS playing at forward
Fiore's amazing form continues of late...we'll hear calls for him to return to the national team for sure coming up again...
There have been calls for that all along, even since before the World Cup. By the way, Trapattoni is supposedly meeting with the federation on Monday "to discuss his future".
Simeone just coming back off injury, he may play in second half or more likely on the weekend vs Empoli...
Halftime Lazio 1-0...tho uefa.com has Red Star earning some chances as the half wore on... Parma underway vs. Wisla...
I found occasional comments on the Parma game available at eurosport.com. Apparently, Wisla got off to a good start, but Parma has gone ahead on 26 minutes on a long strike from Donati.
'53 at the Olimpico, Simeone enters for Liverani who was Lazio's best player in first half according to uefa.com 1-0 Lazio...
That has to be the thinking, don't want to go to Yugo holding just a 1-0 edge.... Seems like S. Inzaghi has blown a few decent chances, no surprise.... '75 1-0 Lazio
Wisla has tied the game in Parma just as the second half begins. Literally seconds after the restart. Bad news for Parma. Apparently, Wisla has been in good form in Poland lately.
86' - Pancaro on for Fiore. Mancini has apparently given up hope for another goal and just wants to ensure the 1-0 stands.
