Portugal's doing well in UEFA cup.

Porto: Through convincingly overcoming Denizlispor easily

Boavista: Just scraping through on away goals against Hertha Berlin with a last minute goal.

    Porto now face Panathinaikos

    Boavista now face Málaga

    Any comments?

    Black,

Yesterday was a huge day for Portuguese football!!!!

First, this marks the first time that Portugal has had two teams in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup.

Second, with the elimination yesterday of AEK Athens, Porto joins Milan and Rome as the only cities with more than one team alive in European championships. Rome could fall out of this group, as neither Lazio nor Roma have qualified for the next round in their respective tournaments. For that matter, Inter still has some work to do to move on in its tough Champions League grouping.

Third, the two victories allowed Portgual to leapfrog Holland in the important UEFA rankings, which determine how many teams from each country gain entry into the CL and UEFA Cup tournaments. If the competitions were to end today, Portugal would have six teams eligible in 2004, up from four.

Four, the SuperLiga gains some respect across Europe, as a team like Boavista, who have struggled this year in domestic play can fare so well against some very good teams in Europe.

While Boavista is riding a fairy tale, FC Porto has a legitimate chance of winning this tournament. The team has dominated domestic play, and has a very strong roster that can give fits to ANY of the remaining clubs.

Now, when you say 2004, do you mean this upcoming season (03/04), or the following season (04/05)?

Well, tomorrow (3/13) is the day of the first legs.

Porto takes on Panathinaikos at as Antas at 9:00 local time, 4:00 EST.

Boavista is at Malaga at 9:30 local time. I'm guessing that's 3:30 EST?

I think Porto has a really good chance of moving on to the semifinals. They've been having one hell of a season, and I would love to see them bring some UEFA glory to Portugal.

Boavista on the other hand... I wish them a lot of luck, and I hope they win, but I don't think it's going to happen.

Oh, BTW, is the UEFA Cup final a home-away series? Or just one final game?

The final is one game. It's in Seville this year, not sure about the date.

Porto and Panathinaikos about to kick off.

UEFA matchtracker giving no commentary on Porto-Panathinaikos. Anyone know how the game is going (besides there being no score)?

Looks like Malaga is taking it to Boa and threatening to add to their lead. Would love to see an away goal here.
