Best part about the Zenit win is that AEK Athens are currently first in Greece.

And the worst part is that they have to play Sevilla, who will wear this.

    Okay.........

Why did Dnipro wear shirts with Cyrillic fonts on the back. I though UEFA didn't allow this? Is this only for CL.

Loko had to change their sponsporship logo for the CL. As well as wearing Latin script on the back.

If this is so. then Maybe Dnipro have broken the rules. Can anyone shed any light on this.

I guess they were successfull in arguing that their Biggest National Pride After Makhno and Bandera (i.e. the Latin "i" in the alphabet) got 'em off as the "real Europeans" which they long so badly to become.

    How Zenit can qualify

Thanks to the help of modern science, an exmplery degree in nuclear physics and the research and aide of several noble-winning mathematicians, I can finally work this out.

    * Zenit don't play, so it is out of their hands now, sorry guys just gotta watch the telly and hope I guess.

    * They can only finish 3rd, hence they will get a first placed team in another group (read Middlesbrough - :D)

    * In simplified terms, they need to hope that Aachen fail to win, they are at already knocked out AEK. If Aachen get a draw, then Zenit will go through on a better Goal difference, thanks to their thrashing of AEK earlier on in the comp.

    * Should Aachen win, then it is goodbye to europe for Zenit for this season.

    * In the other game, Lille and Sevilla will playoff for top spot.

~ Hang on a minute, it wasn't that hard, was it?

Well no games for Zenit in the competition, but their fate was decided tonight with other games in the group.

Sadly not good news for the Culturalists.....:(

    Group H

    AEK Athens 0-2 Alemannia Aachen
    [Meijer 56, Gomez 84]

    Lille 1-0 Sevilla
    [Moussilou 77]
    [Sent off = Rafael Schmitz (L) 90]

    Code:
                             P W D L F-A +/- Pts
    Lille 4 3 0 1 5-3 2 9
    Sevilla 4 2 1 1 6-4 2 7
    Alemannia Aachen 4 2 1 1 5-4 1 7
    [B]Zenit Saint Petersburg 4 1 2 1 9-6 3 5[/B]
    AEK Athens 4 0 0 4 4-12 -8 0
The top three progress, meaning it is bye-bye, for a while now, for poor old Zenit......

Sadly no Zenit in the next round. But Dnipro have qualified for the second round and will be joined by fellow Ukrainian neighbours Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv. CSKA Moskva will also compete in the next round after finishing third in their Champions League group.

And, by finishing out of the medals, their only hope for Europe now is to win the Cup or to have CSKA or the Wings win it.

It doesn't matter. If the Horses or the Wings take the Cup, Zenit are in Europe regardless of who was in the final.
Now, if Loko won the Cup, the losing finalists would get the berth. But Loko can't, so they won't.

The Culturals were perfect poster boys of why the Russian season should remain as it is and not move to the European "summer-fall" system. Russian clubs simply cannot play in late November or December. We can't. Never could!
Of course, now they will very likely institute the "summer-fall", since this is Russia and all the laws of Bizzaro World apply.

Doesn't Russia have 18 months or so to play its cup? (the longest in any European nation.)

Playing in December? Maybe if they reverted to a special Snow-futsal type game.....Now that I would watch!

The Cup actually starts before last year's Cup is over, believe it or not.
Second Division teams begin play sometime in April in the 1/1024th-final. RPL sides don't get into the action until there are 16 clubs left, so the Round of 32 can be held, sometime in August. At this point they play home-and-home series until the Final is held in Moscow in May of nex year.
In my opinion, this works just fine.

Crazy Russian cup, thats what you get for being such a big country.....anyways,

No games but we have to make it official:

Zaragoza can't overtake Dnipro and thus the Ukrainians get first place...

    Code:

    [B]Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 4 3 0 1 7-5 2 9[/B]
    Zaragoza 4 2 1 1 5-3 2 7
    Austria Vienna 4 2 1 1 4-3 1 7
    Club Brugge 4 1 2 1 5-5 0 5
    FC Utrecht 4 0 0 4 2-7 -5 0
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Well no point here, but lets see how the rest compared to Tbilsi....

Well the draw for the 2nd round of the UEFA cup was made today. Here's how the teams fared.

Dynamo Kyiv [UKR] v Villarreal [ESP]

    * Winner will play the winner of Valencia [ESP] v Steaua Bucharest [ROM]

Shakhtar Donetsk [UKR] v Schalke 04 [GER]

    * Winner will play the winner of Alemannia Aachen [GER] v AZ Alkmaar [NED]

Partizan Belgrade [SGC] v Dnipro Dnipropetrovesk [UKR]

CSKA Moskva [RUS] v Benfica [PRT]

    * Winner will play the winner of the above game. So a potential 3rd round clash between Dnipro and CSKA!

Pretty tough draw for everyone except Dnipro. Benefica will be a tough match for CSKA particularly out of season but if they do make it through they would be strong favourites against either Dnipro or Partizan.

    bump

Just to let everyone know that the CSKA match against Benfica on the 17th of February will be played at Krasnodar mainly due to the fact that the club can't guarentee that the pitch will be suitable for playing on.

The weather at the minute in Eastern Europe is horrendous (much like the North of the USA I think.)

UEFA Cup thread, you lazy buggers

    1/32 today
    Partizan - Dnipro 2:2

looked like an even game in Belgrade, and Dnipro comes away with a good
    result. Venglynsky didn't score

    Shakhtar - Shalke 04 1:1

A fast-paced affair, Shalke scored first on the 7th minute. Aghahowa wasted clear chances, and then Shakhtar's new and old Brazilians took over and equalized a few minutes from time. A decent result for this time of the year, but Shakhtar will stay true to form and lay a giant egg in Germany, I predict.

Tomorrow -- Dynamo plays Villareal. VPERED DYNAMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure there're some Russian teams playing as well.

    Yep. CSKA vs. Benfica

Question to DynamoKiev: I read somewhere that Dinamo signed some 19 yr old from Volin', who is supose to be the next Nedved and a Brazilian CB, who was voted the best CB in Brazil. Do you know their names? Whatever hapenned to Ghioane?
