    From my understanding, his technical staff have access to replays. Don't they? That's what all those monitors that all the teams have in their benches are?

    Yes, but why wait to preserve your dignity when you can react immediately and look like a fool?

    Look, I sort of get it. I've run into plenty of coaches who just exude emotion and the passion for the game is in them. I don't think having access to monitors can "solve" that. But Arteta is just another level (there are others, I want to be clear--he's not actually unique, though perhaps at this level/stage). And he's there because no one's chosen to work to modify his behavior at all. This all could be dealt with. But a lot of people have collectively decided that it's not worth it.

    Can somebody walk me through this yellow card? I am seeing explanation that Saka goes over the ball and makes reckless contact with the opponent. I am finding it hard to see this. It does not happen if PSG player doesn't slide - and not make contact with the ball either. Do you guys agree with this? What am I missing?

    He goes in leading with his studs, straight-legged, and over the ball. The facts that he got the ball first and then only made very glancing contact with the opponents leg, those are the only things saving him from a straight red.

    Does that edict not apply to the reserve referees? I just saw that Raphael Claus refereed the UAE President’s Cup final a week and a half ago.

    Claus is a special case. This may have been a last trial run to confirm that he will whistle a match at the World Cup. I’d expect all three Brazilians to get games at the moment.

    So I guess, barring a late injury/fitness issue, this throws out the “two group stage games for every referee” hypothesis?

    Was that ever a hypothesis? I’ve never thought you’d see that balance. At minimum, the chances of someone screwing up is increased. But also I just think you’ll see different planning.

    Just ridiculous. What an insult to UEFA officials and an insult to the actual game itself.

    Worse than Frappart getting the assignment.

    Obviously not from an administration standpoint, but I'm sure the UEFA referees themselves will.

    I'm sure Ceferin made the call himself.

    Why?

    There's no rule that the UEFA Super Cup appointment has to go to a UEFA referee every year. Was the inclusion of Al-Ghandour at EURO 2000 an insult to UEFA officials?

    I was actually thinking that UEFA referees don't care too much about this assignment. And if they do, usually people sort of know who is going to be rewarded from the previous season. So maybe one trio that got bumped here will be annoyed. But I doubt (and again, could be wrong) that UEFA referees as a whole will be outraged by this.
