He won't be fired. Varandas will not fire him. Any other coach with 8 losses in 18 games would have been fired by now. He will only step down or another team takes him.
Europa League is over and we know the potential teams we can draw against in the playoff for the Europa League knockouts. The 3rd place CL teams face the 2nd place EL teams in a knockout home and away leg to determine who stays in Europe. Our potential opponents: PSV Rennes Roma Union Berlin Man United Midtylland Nantes Monaco
He won the league and took Sporting to the Champions League knockout stage - many times this type of regressive behavior could be explained by the simple fact that he’s achieved nearly everything he could at Sporting and may be frustrated by that fact and not even aware of it. Frustrated because previously the goals were clear and now, not so much. I say nearly everything because unlike Benfica and Porto, Sporting have yet to do it consistently. But that doesn’t discount his achievements, because they are seriously impressive. He could be a dud for the rest of his career but what he achieved with Braga and Sporting is well above normal. It’s not Mourinho Porto levels but it’s not far at all from AVB Porto achievement levels. But battling consistently with Benfica and Porto is a battle that Sporting has always been in, so it inherently goes beyond what a coach can do. Simeone is a perfect example. He brought Atletico to new heights, but they’re still not even close to being in the Real and Barcelona stratosphere, historically speaking.
We got FC Midtylland, First game in Portugal, return leg in Denmark. Easier than a few of the options, really a team we should beat.
