This was just a terrible game. The point was there to at least salvage something. Lingard should be benched for a good period of time after that blunder, dear Lord. Just unexcusable! Ole has a lot to be blamed for as well. Those tactics after going down to 10 men. Just pathetic... Must win games now.
well this is the downside to Wan-Bissaka not learning how to tackle outside of lunging. he is always going to be teetering on the brink of a yellow or red card. what's worse is two mishit attempts ended up going in. yet another group stage goof
This is good for us. That will give us a wake up call. Similar to the one against Basel and Benfica. Same feel.
The Dalot for Sancho sub is the only one that made sense, given the circumstances. The rest felt random or simply did not make a lick of sense. It's shocking to be that bad at something like this tbh...
Fred was not good at the 6. Donny did well in that 45, always looks great to get out of trouble and has an eye for a pass, assured in possession.
well at least Fred has being in midfield alone as an excuse. Lingard however. very poor start to fighting for his place/minutes. no words for that
VDB for me was the only positive in midfield today, all considering. He should be starting on the regular, get him minutes to be fully fit and gel with the rest of the team. He is levels above Fred, Matic... It's silly he's not being used as a regular starter. Wake up call for everyone, that's for damn sure!
yup. could have gone 3-3-3 and kept van de Beek on to at least try win it on the counter or double the 1-0. chose the worst option in Lingard and paid the highest price
Nope. Very unlikely anyone has committed this type of mistake playing for Manchester United in the final year of their contract trying to earning a new contract after rejecting West Ham United in an away game at Young Boys.
...... 2 - Manchester United managed just two shots in this match, the fewest Opta have on record in any of their 138 UEFA Champions League matches since 2003-04. Their second and final shot of the match came in the 25th minute from Cristiano Ronaldo. Stalled. pic.twitter.com/tDuX3CSn87— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) September 14, 2021 With all we've got too: how embarrassing...
Away in Europe especially, if you can’t control the middle of the pitch you are not going very far. Stacked offence and an improved CB doesn’t change that.
Better hope we can hold serve at home and collect max points in those games and manage to get something in our trips to Italy and Spain. Don't even want to think about failing to advance again in the CL this season: simply would be completely unacceptable.
Very poor from united, i stopped watching once they level up and extremely disappointed with how Ole managed the 2nd half, terrible feckup by Lingard.
Many so called top reds on here will disagree and find some sort of excuse for him as usual. 7 losses out of 11 Champions League matches under this man. Not even David Moyes was that bad. Embarrassing!
When it all said and done, he will get the benefit of the doubt (and time) because he was just given a new contract and at this point won't be fired unless it gets real bad. But despite not getting the holding mid that was required, he's still more than enough to do well this season and deliver. He dares not miss on the knockout rounds of the CL again though, because he's done for me if that happens. Just a repeat of the same old story in Europe: very, very frustrating... @jaydalyutd always keeping it real! My sentiments exactly bro! @Adamstott30 @bethTmufc pic.twitter.com/tS2ScnrYvy— jr_sams (@jr_sams) September 14, 2021 Better rebound immediately, starting with the game vs WH this weekend. How to go from feeling great to absolute crap in the space of a few days...
At least, Villareal and Atalanta tying today is a result that works in United's favor. Provided that we take advantage and take care of business at the end of the month vs Villareal.
Tempting to put this down solely to two big individual mistakes and that's a big part of the story of course, but 19-2 in shots (14-0 after the red card) is really not good enough against this level of opposition no matter what happens. Far, far too often under Ole the team looks rudder-less, like they have no idea what they're trying to do, and this second half is a prime example. Ole changed the shape at half but if he gave the team instructions on how he wanted them to play within that shape they were not received at all. There was no coherence to the play and while ultimately we should have gotten the point that would have made it a (barely) acceptable evening this was awful even before Jesse put the icing on the cake.
