Canada, being a much smaller country, has always played younger than age group players.

Sophie Schmidt has been on the full National since she was 16. Christine Sinclair since the same age...

newbiecoach does have a point though. I'm sure that the roster was influenced by the fact that the U-20 team doesn't have much of a budget. In contrast to the U.S. they've only had one camp this year, and none in 2007. Bringing some of these players onto the senior team was a way to give them quality training time and games. That said, they must have done well to earn playing time in the final.

I gather all womens teams in Canada (WNT,U20 and U17) have very little funding from the mother-ship. I have heard the number of $250,000/year/team and it makes you wonder how they can compete effectively internationally. Credit must go the CDN. coaching staff's who have to get creative on proper preparation and work on a shoe string budget. Hats off to the Canadian kids too.

U17 and U20 women's world cup games on TV (ESPN Family). Last year, ESPNU and ESPN360.com showed the entire U20 men's world cup. It sounds like they may do the same (or something similar) later this year with the women's U20 and U17 world cup games. I would guess some will be on ESPNU and some will be on ESPN360.

How many girls are they considering for the U-20 team, every game has a different line up with 4 or 5 new girls. It seems like there is at least 45 to 60 girls being considered for a spot on that roster. I guess the coaches have plenty of time to decide? Anywho, who won last weekends game against Loyola Marymount?

    Game 2: U20 WNT 3, UCLA 1

The 1PM match between USA and UCLA was the more anticipated of the two, with DiCicco expected to bring the top group of players into action against last fall’s NCAA Tournament semifinalist. The athleticism was palpable in the second group from the opening kickoff.

    ....

Given the conditions, both teams appeared more than ready for the full-time whistle. The bright spot for the U.S. on this day will be the powerful front line on display through Leroux’s unpredictable speed bursts, Steinbruch’s contrived cross-field touches, and Nogueira’s smooth transitions. This squad has some major firepower to show in U20 qualifying play later this summer.

Corless Looks Back On Second U-20 National Camp Experience

Freshman defender Kelli Corless (Acworth, Ga.), of the University of Georgia soccer team, recently rejoined the Bulldogs upon returning from her second United States Under-20 Women’s National Team Camp. Corless trained for nine days at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., as she competes for a spot on the 26-player roster.

    ....

Corless’ first stint in the U-20 WNT camp came in January, also in Carson, Calif. She will now wait to find out if she is called into the squad’s next camp, which will be held in May, prior to the team’s trip to Sweden.

The U-20 WNT will play in the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) Qualification, as they attempt to secure a spot in the FIFA U-20 World Championships, held in Chile in November.

The U.S. U-23’s Down the Pilots

    4/18/2008

PORTLAND, Ore. --- The United State’s Under-23 Women’s National Team defeated the Portland Pilots 7-1 Friday night in an exhibition soccer game at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. The U23’s took a 3-1 lead into the locker room before adding four more goals after the break.

Freshman Jessica Tsao had Portland’s only tally of the night with a goal in the 29th minute. With UP trailing 2-0, sophomore Janelle Jacka gained possession on the left wing and made a turn towards the corner. She then sent a beautiful cross into the middle of the box where Tsao finished with a header inside the right post. The score from eight yards out made it a 2-1 match.

The U23’s scored the first of their four second-half goals in the 49th minute when Kiki Bosio capitalized off a reboun. Katie Larkin began the play with a shot that bounced off the left post right to Bosio, who easily punched it in.

Moments later, Tina DiMartino scored on a break away to make it 5-1. DiMartino, who had snuck past the defense, finished from 12 yards out.

Yael Averbuch then scored her second goal of the game with a frozen rope in the 59th minute. Larkin fed Averbuch with a short pass outside the box. Averburch went top shelf with a one-timer from 25 yards out. The U23’s then scored their seventh goal on the night on a strike from Lorraine Quinn, who had possession inside the 18-yard box to the left of the UP goal. Quinn made a move around one defender before deflecting a shot off of another defender. Quinn then punched in a goal off of her own rebound.

Despite the seven goals, Portland freshman goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung made some spectacular stops. She finished with 10 saves on the night, while the U23’s outshot UP 25-8.

In the other net, former Pilot keeper Cori Alexander played the second half in between the pipes for the U23’s, she finished with two saves, while Joanna Haig made one stop during the first 45 minutes.

The U23’s struck first with a goal in the fifth minute. Averbuch collected a loose ball outside the 18-yard box and blasted a left-footed shot towards Portland’s goal mouth. The sinking line drive was perfectly placed into the top left corner of the net, giving the U23’s a 1-nil lead.

The lead grew to 2-0 four minutes later. Katie Larkin gained possession at the top of the box, made a move to the left around two defenders and deposited a shot inside the right post.

After Portland cut the lead in half with the strike from Tsao, Katie Schoepfer re-directed a cross from Bosio towards the UP goal. DeYoung laid out to get a piece of the shot, but the ball bounced off her and trickled into the back of the net.
