its sad how usa refused to throw numbers forward...."kept their shape" in the back....supposedly to prevent counterattacks from damaging them.....but still managed to give up 3 goals on some of the very few times morrocco got forward the usa threw away a chance at a good attack by keeping numbers back,,,,,but it also didnt help them stop morrocco from scoring saw this unfolding in the first half......but mitrovic refused to adjust i DO NOT LIKE THIS COACH he got lucky in the group games imo
Ehhh, I don't know, the replacement rate with U20 kiddos (or maybe, additive rate) is typically 2-4 players graduating to regular status as starters, bench players, or depth. No chance that's gonna form the bulk of the 2030's version of Morocco. Add a guy or two or 3, maybe, but not replace them in bulk.
What’s frustrating is that Morocco played exactly the same as they’ve done all tournament. Defend deep, pack the box, attack behind the left back, make things chaotic in the final third. They did the same thing and it worked. Beat Norris for the first goal, shut up shop, and took advantage of chaos. They have yet to give up a non penalty goal. Felt like the USA played right into their hands by settling for deep crosses and not trying to work into the box. Didn’t really have the personnel for that though.
I wanted the coach to bench Beaudry after giving up that goal against New Caledonia... His footwork and decision-making is so friggin poor for this level. Every time we passed the ball back to him I worried and he made so many mistakes coming out of the box. Today they posted near the 80th min that Morocco had 1 shot on goal and were winning 2-1. Then we have a perfect opportunity to equalize and Brennan isn't even close... FF a minute or two and.... trainwreck. Oh well... in the end I think we did as well as can be expected when you don't have a legit finisher on the team and your GK is a total joke. I do worry that despite the fact that we were able to beat some big nations that there just isn't much top end talent on this team. Not sure any of these guys have a legit USMNT career in their future.?.? I didn't see any real difference-makers.
Kinda hard to make big conclusions when so many of the goals were such disasters. I greatly enjoyed watching us play and thought we showed skill and patience. Campbell was frustrating. The mess on the goals wasn’t just on the goalie to be fair. Really disappointing way to go out - but some encouraging progress too.
For me, hard to really evaluate the players when being so poorly coached. Great players can look really bad in a poor tactical system.
progress? same ol usa for me could tell in the first 10 minutes a loss was likely...even against an inferior opponent dominating possession and not getting any scoring chances is not a good way to play this sport
And those best chances came not from horseshoe dicking around and crossing, but from when the team attacked before letting Morocco get set. Those were the exceptions proving the rule. Most of the time the US deliberately slowly advanced until it had no choice but to send in prayer crosses. It was a terribly naive plan.
A good coach can make adjustments on the fly, recognizing right away how their players are playing at that moment and always having a backup plan.
The only consolation now is that France will win it all and we can say we have beaten the eventual champion…With a Zidane, they can do it…
Morocco was a disciplined team that played a certain way - they are hard to breakdown. I don’t think it was terribly naive personally. We dominated possession.
it was naive. you could see it wasnt working!!! switch it up mitrovic was just sooooo scared of morrocco scoring on counters that he totally neutered his own teams attacking chances.....sending in only 3 or 4 players at a time to the final 3rd......it is nearly impossible for these guys to score that way....in fact, they didnt. that pk was bullshit makeup call. they were going 3 on 8 or 4 on 9 or whatever....fat chance of doing anything like that is it not obvious to you people??????????????????? you have to take some risk at some point what is the alternative? it is what we saw! NOTHING HAPPENING you simply cannot have 75% possession and generate nothing in attack. the us wingers and attackers were swarmed by 2 or 3 players....not even 1 on 1s...1 on 2 or 3s! you must make morrocco pay......draw them out a bit.....play an open game....anything but what we saw morrocco shouldnt have been able to triple team our wide players without paying for it somehow....but the usa simply didnt recognize the issue and come up with a solution what did they do ? kept dribbling into the buzzsaw and finished the game totally demoralized the game plan was a LOSER sticking with it after it clearly wasnt going to work was MALPRACTICE
Same that it ever was… Possession without penetration, is just masturbation! To not turn 70% possession and double figures in corners into goals is just bad soccer. And they weren't even turned into good chances. Is it some type of coaching point throughout US soccer hierarchy, to move the ball at a snail's pace in possession, and not move up the ball other than to try to get a through ball to the wings, without any wingers that could actually cross the ball well? And there was some genius coaching to turn Benja into a back to the goal center forward. WTF? Maybe they only care if he's good with his feet, but I'm a dinosaur that expects his goalkeeper not to give up the first 2 goals on high balls into the 6 yard box. Go out and catch or punch the damn things! Just not quality, and heaven knows what the guy was doing on the 3rd goal. You can't expect to win a World Cup at any level with that kind of weakness, at a traditionally strong US position. That said, it's tough to win without being able to score…
Because scoring in soccer isn’t that simple. Oh let’s just attack before they get set - that will solve everything. Have you ever watched City play? Lots of possession and last season they lost a lot of games because of fragility in defense and inability to turn possession into goals. Was that a coaching problem too? Maybe. But they even had Haaland and without a KDB to unlock determined defenses it sometimes is easier said than done. And in long tournaments tired legs and brains become a factor. As does inconsistency at the youth level.
