Figured it was about time to unstick the last post-game thread and start this one.

question you say the US advances with a tie and so does korea. what happens if Germany win and the US have a draw . Is it not only Korea then that advance with the goal difference.

U20 - US vs South Korea Pre-Game thread

I guess the Germany-Paraguay match is before, and let's just say they tie 0-0 or 1-1. Then both US and S. Korea would be in if we tied 1-1 or 2-2. In fact, I guess S. Korea is automatically in with a tie no matter what happens since they're the only one's with positive goal differential going into play.

So bottom line, US probably needs to score at least 1 goal to advance, and there's a good chance we need to win. Based on the prior post-game match thread...

    1) I would be OK with Adu not starting. For starters, it's unclear if he's match fit for this level, and let's be honest, his defense is not yet up to par. However, I would bring him in immediately if we went down a goal in the first half, and at the latest would insert him to start the second half.

    2) Get Santino Quaranta off the pitch. Now. I don't care how well he did 3 years ago, 2 years ago, last year, or last month. In the last 2 games, it's clear he's either very injured or very out of his league. Probably the latter.

    3) Do we have anyone who can replace CJ Klass. He seems like a nice guy, but he too is just out of his league. The game at this level is just too fast for him. Go back to college, finish your senior year, and get a job in the normal world like the rest of us BS posters.

Korea would advance on goal differential, but the US could still secure one of the 4 3rd place spots available since there are only 6 groups.

You can get a clue of our chances by looking at the standings/points totals for the groups that have already completed play. Looks like we'd have a solid chance to go through with a draw.

I don't know that I like Rongen's attitude on bringing Freddy in...:(

“…You’ll see Freddy when we are down a goal or two in the last 20 minutes,..”

Exactly. Reeks of a defeatist attitude, if you ask me.

Start Freddy. It's situations like these where you have to go for the jugular.

Yep.. Okay all of you that want to see Freddy tomorrow root for South Korea to score a couple of quick goals and hold on to the lead 'til the 75th minute!

The best the USA looked against Germany was the few minutes Freddy was in..

No, the best the US looked was in the first 15 minutes when the defense was air tight and the offense was able to create scoring chances. We were dangerous offensively in the final 20, but the game was decided and we did allow more good attacks then id have liked.

Personally Id like to see the US up its defensive pressure all over the field. And for me Freddy doesnt figure into that, as he didn't bother trying to play any defense that I could see.

You're right. That was a good period of the game. Thought we were going to go up 1-0 at one point there, now that I think back. :)

I'm cross posting from my post on the "can the US make the semis?" thread on this board:

    Here's the scenario

    Win-- In

    Tie-- In

Lose by 1 goal--In if Deutschland beats Paraguay by any score or if Paraguay beats Deutschland by 2 or more.

Lose by 2 goals-- In if Deutschland beats Paraguay by more than 1 goal or if Paraguay beats Deutschland by 3 or more (!!)

    Lose by 3 goals--Out

No, wait a minute...I've got a head cold here, but I'm going to give it a shot...

    Lose by 3 goals--

In if Deutschland beats Paraguay by more than 2 goals or if Paraguay beats Deutschland by more than 3 goals AND Egypt beats Japan AND England does not beat Colombia by more than 5 goals AND if Saudia Arabia does not beat Cote D'Ivoir AND if Mexico does not beat Ireland.

Lose by 4 or more goals--Just add 1 to all of the goal differentials for the "lose by 3 goals" scenario for each additional goal we lose by. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Also, Germany plays Paraguay before us on the same field, so we'll have a bit better picture by gametime.

If Germany beats Paraguay, both teams can kick the ball around comfortably, knowing they will both advance w/ a draw. Of course we advance w/ a draw regardless, but SoKo needs help.

I think the bigger question is who we will play in the next round. :)

Adu is going to start over Magee. Adu has a history playing well against the Koreans. This would be a crisis if we don't qualify with Adu not starting.

    Prediction 3-1

I just saw that Australia beat Brazil.

    That makes me smile.

I hope Rico owns this match.

Not according to what the coach just stated.
He said look for Freddy if we are losing by a goal or two, late.
The quote and link is on another one of these threads but I can't find it now.

I thought he said that after the Paraguay game. He might have changed his mind since then.

I'm not sure. I think it was after the Germany match. It was posted today for the first time also.
I wish I could find it.

DUH!! No wonder I couldn't find it.. It's in this thread..lol previous page..:D

It was after the Germany match:

"on Wednesday morning and the Dutch-born boss has time and again expressed his preference for brining Adu in only in times of dire necessity. “…You’ll see Freddy when we are down a goal or two in the last 20 minutes,”

Hey, I posted that article. :)

Taking Rongen's quote into account (an attitude and mindset I don't agree with at all, by the way), bring Freddy on in a one-goal game, leading, or if the game is tied inside the last 20 minutes.

Let's see Freddy score the goal that will seal passage to the next round... and thereby mark the next step in his growing legend.

But I still stand firm on my plea to Rongen to make the ballsy move to start Freddy and go for the jugular.
