He's got pretty good quickness, and knows his way around the field.
Anyone know if they plan on holding Koroma back for a cycle in terms of not lising his eligibility for the 2011 U17 WC or are they gonna use him now if he is good enough?
BTW, so much for the theory that having the head coach and two assistants from NY would mean a disproportionate number of New Yorkers would be in residency. Of the kids on the roster, only two - Alex Bramall from Newburgh and Brian Spann from Somers - New York kids are in residency this semester.

More kids in camp born in January than in Sept.-Dec., COMBINED. And, almost half the kids – 19 – were born in the first quarter and the other half – 21 – were born the other three quarters. That would appear to fly against logic, especially when the more talented, at least for now, trio of Renken, Gyau and Jerome were all born the last 5 months of the year.
It may simply be a typo (or I may simply be misreading) but its interesting to see Koroma listed as a defender.
They did that to make Sandon happy, although the kid will have to grow at least another five inches before he will be fully satisfied.
Sandon, Are any of these kids on the path of say a Altidore where they look to be ready at 17/18 yrs old and having an opportunity to make an impact on MLS? Maybe its an unrealistic expectation, but I thought the signing of teens would be on the increase in MLS as a result of an ever widening talent pool and for obvious financial reasons. Mind you I didn't believe it to be anything like several a year, but there are certainly teens out there with the skill set to compete for spots IMO.
At this point I'd rather have a really big forward than another big centerback. We have plenty of big centerbacks. Granted, no one in the YNT setup uses them, but they're there. But big forwards? Not a lot of those out there in our various YNT - or senior team - pools.
Although he played at mid and foward for the U17, 6' 5" Omar Gonzales played centerback for the Dallas Texans Red 88s during the last 2 years of their 3 year run as National Champs and during the team's Dallas Cup Super Group championship ( He was in residency during their first title run). He was great back there and very confident on the ball. I would love to see him in the mix again, somewhere.
Obviously I can't say for certain but based on the Nike friendlies, it's hard not to think Jerome isn't on an Altidorian path with Gyau and Renken possible depending on how then can handly the physical play. I think the win-now mandate for coaches in MLS combined with the limited reserve team opportunities and the salaries has kept the number of teenagers in MLS limited but I suspect that will grow as the academies mature and the reserve team play more games and, of course, MLS offers more competitive entry-level salaries. Right now, the money they offer rarely is enough to either pass on Europe or a scholarship to a good college. Omar who? Never heard of him. Apparently, neither has Peter Nowak or Thomas Rongen. Correct. 92s and younger.
More 93's will be enrolled next year when then 91's drop out............plus every year at least a few players on the world cup squad arent even from residency if i remember correctly.
Ok, the end score was 3-1 but the history was different. I saw the game. The first half the Fire played with the 1st squad with Blanco and company. The U-17 had 7 91s and 4 92s (Gk, Mid, Donovan, and Arjona). Donovan scored in the first 3 minutes because a goalkeeper mistake. The U-17 dominated the first half, and created more opportunities than the Fire. The Fire had 3 shots cleared at goal. The first half ended up 1-nil. The fFire's players were frustrated and complained to the referee than the U-17 were playing very physical. The first team from the fire played for 30 minutes, and later they changed all the players to the second squad. The second squad played the last part of the first half, and 15 minutes of the second half. For the U-17, they played 45 minutes on the first half and the second half was 30 minute game. On the second half, the main U-17 (92s ) played versus the second squad of the Fire, and later the Fire brought a third squad. It was bad for the U-17 (92) with all the players from the Nike Friendlies except Renken (injury and out for 5 months) and Jerome. The lost 3-nil in 30 minutes half.
BRADENTON, Fla. - The Chicago Fire kicked off its 2008 campaign with a 3-1 win in a preseason scrimmage against the U.S. U-17 Men's National Team at Field 5 of the IMG Academies facility in Bradenton, Fla. The Fire played varied lineups in three separate 30-minute intervals, with veteran Fire midfielder Diego Gutierrez wearing the captain's armband for the first session. The Fire went down a goal early in the first minute of play when U.S. U-17 forward Donovan Henry picked off an errant back pass from Chicago defender Wilman Conde and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Jon Busch. The Fire had few offensive chances throughout the next 20 minutes as the U-17's had the run of play. Chicago made line-change substitutions at the 30-minute mark, with forward Chris Rolfe taking the captain's band for the second stanza. The Fire nearly tied the game in the 40th minute when midfielder Justin Mapp sent a left-sided cross to the feet of forward Floyd Franks, but his volley from point-blank range went just over the crossbar. Just before the 45th minute mark, Mapp was substituted out due to a right forearm injury. The Fire had another chance to even the score in the 50th minute when rookie midfielder Peter Lowry sent a through-ball to Franks for an attempt on-goal, but the U-17 goalkeeper saw the play develop and dove to make the save. In the 60th minute, a cross into the box from was chested down by Lowry right to the feet of Franks. Franks' shot from eight yards out skimmed wide left of the frame. Chicago made another mass substitution in the 60th minute, with Franks taking the captain's band. A ball out of the back from Fire defender Daniel Woolard in the 74th minute fell right to Franks, and the forward made no mistake with a strong finish to knot the game at 1-1. One minute later, rookie midfielder Tim Conway struck a 30-yard attempt that hit the left post but was eventually cleared off the line. Fire midfielder Brian Plotkin substituted in for Franks in the 76th minute and made his presence known three minutes later on a corner kick. Plotkin's service from the left corner connected with the head of rookie forward Patrick Nyarko, who redirected it into the back of the net from six yards out to give the "Men in Red" a 2-1 advantage. A give-and-go between rookie midfielder Kei Kasiguran and Plotkin freed Plotkin for a one-on-one opportunity in the 86th minute, but his right-footed shot pinged off the right post and out of the penalty area. The Fire netted a late insurance goal in the 89th minute, when a pass from Plotkin connected with rookie midfielder Zach Pope near the end line. Pope sent the ball back into the box for Nyarko to one-time it low into the net for the game's final tally in a 3-1 Fire win. Well taking away the best two players from the U-17's in the second half would def. have a big effect on them. It makes sense though that they lost as most of them are 15 or younger. As for the first half that is quite amazing. I heard Donovan Henry was a great player but in the nike friendlies he looked quite average. Its amazing that the 91's were beating the fires first choice squad. Just goes to show how good the youth are in this country.
Yes, Jerome played the last few minutes for Guay. I can tell you that all U-17 residential players can play. They are not afraid to go head to head with the professional players. Remember that these kids are 13, 14, 15, and 16 y/o. One of the 92 players on the first half needed to mark an 6'4" player from the Fire in corner kick. It was amazing the speed of play from the 91s and 92s.
