http://www.ussoccer.com/News/U-15-Boys/2011/03/U15-BNT-Set-for-First-Camp-of-2011-at-The-HDC.aspx From the US Soccer blurb ... Coach Jim Barlow; 36 players; 22 returning from the last camp (Bradenton in December); 20 from DA clubs. I normally don't recognize the players' names, but their geographic distribution always interests me. Roster by Position: GOALKEEPERS (4): Gianni Carillo (New York Red Bulls Academy; Pine Bush, N.Y.), Cesar Jerez (Cosmos Academy West; Ontario, Calif.), Evan Louro (New York Red Bulls Academy; South River, N.J.), Carter Richardson (Crew Soccer Academy; Dublin, Ohio) DEFENDERS (13): Vernon Bailey (Dallas Texans; Dallas, Texas), Bryce Cregan (PA Classics; Dallastown, Pa.), Michael Jimenez (Chicago Fire Juniors; Munster, Ind.), Guyllian Kabala (Seacoast United; Manchester, N.H.), Patrick Khouri (Daniel Island Soccer Academy; Charleston, S.C.), Elijah Martin (Cal Odyssey; Fresno, Calif.), Matt Nance (Vardar; Washington, Mich.), John Requejo (Santa Barbara SC; Carpinteria, Calif.), Jeffrey Rhodes (Westside United; Brownsburg, Ind.), Joe Rodriguez (Matchfit Chelsea; Montclair, N.J.), Bruno Scodari (Olney Boys and Girls Club; Silver Spring, Md.), Billy Stevens (NY Red Bulls Academy; New Hyde Park, N.Y.), Wilfred Williams (Fusion; Johnson City, Tenn.) I care more about the player from Shalrie Joseph SC!!!!!! The jokes write themselves!! There was a Yanks Abroad thread about this kid, with some info. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1247188&page=2 Apparently some foreign clubs were very interested in him.........and his US citizenship status is unclear. Haitian dad and Japanese mom...living in Massachussetts. It's a small world after all.............
Maybe he's earned his spot and they just want to give some other players a try... I suspect Guyllian Kabala (Seacoast United; Manchester, N.H.), who's brother plays for the Revs academy, to join once he's of age. Also, I'd suspect Zachary Herrivaux (Shalrie Joseph SC; Chestnut Hill, Mass.) to join the Revs academy as well(naturally ). Nice to see some guys from New England in the pool, though it'd be even nicer if the Revs could establish a pre-academy team.
LOLOL I was thinking the same thing, figured maybe the OP was making a joke on NE's academy.... Also of note, 2 of the best keepers in the age group on the same team
Westside Metros has been one of the best clubs in that area for a while now. Pretty sure Danny Mwanga played for them. Is the Timbers Academy set up yet? There also seems to be a lack of players from the DC/Maryland/VA region, which is usually a decent hotbed.
U.S. head coach Jim Barlow will work with a group of 36 players, all born in 1996, during the week. This will be the first generation of players who are YOUNGER than MLS. I'm waiting to see who will be the first player MLS signs who was born after the league played its first game.
One of many signs of DA's making their mark at the expense of Bradenton. It's all unfolding right before our eyes.
I don't read anything into the rosters at the u15 level. FCD, NE, Chicago, DC, etc. all won their U15/16 divisions with some really quality players last year........and they're barely represented on the roster. FCD's kids will be on their trip to Madrid..........and we'll probably find out there are other DA teams competing in various competitions at that time also. Ultimately, I think of U15 camps as simply a means for USSF scouts to check out potential Bradenton players for the next U17 cycle.
it'll be right at the end of their trip, but the Chicago U16 will be training with the team in Charleston til the end of the week
Do all these kids play together for their club? If so they must do very well in what ever league their in.
All I meant was the trip to Spain for FC Dallas is an example of the resources that DA's have and will become ever more prominent. Exposing more youth players to the exprience of a professional club etc...is what i meant by happening right before our eyes.
I just wish we had some kind a residency program for this age group. Those are crucial years for a soccer player. It seems like all that week is going to do is a tryout for kids they want to invite to there next cycle at Bradenton.
And we know that many young players - though probably not most - would decline an invitation to Bradenton, so the players invited to this camp may already be culled from the "if invited to Bradenton will accept" group. Other posts, in this thread and elsewhere, suggest that some players (and their families) are either happy right where they are and/or are already angling for Europe, etc. Bradenton is not on top of everyone's list, certainly.
We also need to consider that not all kids have the week of March 13-20 off for spring break. I don't read anything at all into these rosters, other than to check out some names and faces that I haven't seen before. These aren't the 36 best U15's in the country. Not remotely close. These are just 36 U15's that the US staff wanted to get a look at, and were also willing to train in California the week of March 13th. Just, for instance, RBNY finished 5th in their U15/16 development academy division last year.......and yet are the most represented team in this camp. What does that mean? Nothing, really. I don't care about results at the U15 level. But it probably tells you there's some talented players on the other teams in their DA division that aren't at this camp. The U15 level's kind of nebulous for me. In the hotly contested Texas division of the development academy, FCD finished in first last season. Meanwhile, the Houston Dynamo academy finished in last (9th). But I can assure you're there's some good talent on that Dynamo U15/16 team. So what does it really mean? Not much really..............
You mite be rite most 13 and 14 year olds if there good enough mite try to go to Europe instead, but I think if bradenton had a residency for that age most would go. Proper training at that age group in the U.S. is pay to play for the most part (Except for the Cosmos academies and a few mls teams as far as I know) and is very expensive. If there parents could get there talented kids in a free professional academy most would jump at it I would think. Who knows doesn't sound like that will ever happen though people on the board say U.S. Soccer academy doesn't have the money to do it. There probably rite. I guess well have to wait till the MLS academies get fully funded down to that age group. They will, but that could be years away.
Friedel tried that.... know he's bankrupt. Quite frankly its tough finding the funds and sponsorships to pay for the residency.
I am sure it is. The Vancouver Residency Academy costs 1 million a year to run. It's not cheap but if they can sell one of the players to a European team that pays for the academy for years. That's how they make there money it's a business and that's how teams in the MLS have to look at it. It can be a very profitable business too.
They also have to look at it as a cost effective way of talent acquisition. We'll see over time but the world's smaller clubs realize its a cost effective way to acquire talent for the long term. I think Dallas will ultimately realize they benefit with better and less expensive talent than to bring in Denilson for a cool million a season.
Friedel is bankrupt because he tried a standalone residential academy in Cleveland with 14 or so players with no sense of cash flow or big picture. He did it the wrong way. I think a large club with hundreds of players can find away through increasing dues for hundreds of players $25 per head and then getting a corporate sponsorship or two, then discussing with USSF providing incentives for providing elite players to MLS academies for 'development fee'. There is a way to do it it just to have a foundation in solid business practice that Freidel's Academy did not have.
