Mexico vs USA in Houston???? I have seen post that say there is a tentative agreement for a friendly between Mexico and USA in Houston. Has anything been confirmed? I am trying to plam my business trips so I can be here in Houston for the match. Thanks,
Mexico vs USA in Houston???? nothing has been confirmed yet by USSF but soccertv.com has been reporting for awhile that its April 29th at 8. I hope this is the case. I havent heard anything about a venue for it though.
Re: Re: Mexico vs USA in Houston???? This game is a stupid idea. Remember are last game in Denver against them? They can't even play clean in a friendly. Why bother play against a hack team that is a tier below us?
I could see this as a few reasons to have US v. Mexico play here: USSF could line its coffers while testing out new markets to possibly expand MLS. Houston hasn't had much international games for a while. US v. Mexico would bring out a lot of fans. I have only heard speculation and nothing on www.ussoccer.com website. This would most definitely not be considered a home game.
the only way to test a market for MLS expansion is to have MLS teams play, trying to base it on Nat team game or international game is a big mistake
Re: Re: Re: Mexico vs USA in Houston???? All the griping aside, those of us in Texas are dreaming that this'll happen. It's been more than ten years since the US men have played in Texas. Sure, there'll be a lot of folks rooting for Mexico. But there'll also be a solid turnout for the Yanks. I've got nearly a dozen friends that keep asking me if tickets are available yet. I keep having to tell them I haven't heard anything. It's starting to get really frustrating.
Mexico vs USA in Houston???? Yes I agree, I cant wait to go to the game and no amount of Mexcians is going to scare me off. I really wish they would confirm or something, its only 2 months away. Its about time a US game was held in Texas.
How are tickets to matches like this handled? Does USSF (as well as the Mexican football federation) get an allotment to sell? Or does Ticketmaster sell the entire lot?
This ain't the LA Coliseum... The crowd at Reliant would certainly be overwhelmingly pro-Mexican. So what? There's no history here of crowd trouble like we've heard about in the LA Coliseum. Of course, that's partly because we just don't get many US nats games in Texas, so there hasn't been much opportunity for crowd trouble. But the political climate in Texas surrounding immigration and related issues just isn't as charged as has been the case at times in California. I may be misreading things terribly, but I wouldn't expect that many fans who would otherwise like to see the US play would be scared away. And they shouldn't be. If this game happens at Reliant, I intend to get my tix for good seats near the top of a central section of the lower bowl. And que sera, sera.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Mexico vs USA in Houston???? Not quite 10 years. The last time the US played in Texas was March 25, 1995 against Uruguay in the Cotton Bowl. That game is signifigant because A) It was Bora's last game as coach of the U.S. and B) Ante Razov got a cap while he was still playing college ball at UCLA, making him the last - probably ever -active college player to get a cap from the U.S. (For those who don't remember, college players getting capped used to be commonplace.)
Re: Re: Re: Re: Mexico vs USA in Houston???? I think any time the US plays El Tri, US diehards will show up en masse. If this happens, I'd like to go.
Re: Re: Re: Mexico vs USA in Houston???? It will be a perfect opportunity for... Pablo Mastroeni to break Cuauhtemoc Blancos's legs,... for someone to break the cheek bone of Zigifredo Mercado, and... for someone to fracture the skull of Rafa Marquez. That's why they should play. And if of one of those clowns doesn't show, just put Luna or Torrado in a wheelchair to send a message. I'm sure the folks down in Texas will eat it up.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Mexico vs USA in Houston???? Kirovski played, as well. Wasn't that game abondoned due to lightning? It's one of the few games that I don't have on tape. Give Texas their game and just get it on.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Mexico vs USA in Houston???? Sounds like a perfect game for John Doyle. He could do all that in one play. Seriously, this would be a great to test out new players. I wonder if we could get some Euros with little exposure to come over?
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Mexico vs USA in Houston???? Lightning's putting it mildly. The signage was being blown across the field. It was borderline tornado. Some of the folks over on the Burn boards will remember it quite clearly. But obviously I don't, since I was remembering it as occurring before the '94 WC.
Last I heard (can't remember where) the match was to be played at Robertson Stadium. Tickets to matches there in the past have handled through the ticket office at Fiesta. Of course Reliant Stadium makes more sense form a $$$$ stanpoint since there are so many more seats. As far as I know this would be the first match at any level to be played there.
I know I will be there IF this happens but I am not so sure that this will turn out to be a home game for Mexico. We in Texas have been deprived of a US nats game for so long - I wouldn't be surprised for a whole bunch of us gringos to make the drive and make some noise. I just hope it happens.
Estadio Robertson? Playing this game at Robertson would be odd, but odd things happen. They'd be giving up around 30,000 additional seats that would surely be sold. Robertson hosts Mexican friendlies and Pre-Pre's, so much of the potential audience is already very familiar and comfortable with the venue, but I don't understand why the USSF would leave all that money on the table. Part of the reason for having this game in the first place is to pull in a nice payday for both feds.
The venue that has been in negotiations for this event is Reliant Stadium. I've got a solid source on that, but I haven't actually heard any news in several weeks, so I'm not sure what's going on. I may find out more this weekend.
Rumor mill... FWIW, the guys on Radio Noticias (920 AM) in Houston mentioned this afternoon that this game is set for May 8 at Reliant. No sources given - it's still sports talk radio, after all. A caller asked about the game and then complained that prices would be too high at Reliant. They told him that if you wanna play in first world stadiums, you gotta pay first world prices.
