Def something BBC should do a report on. The most educated footballers on the planet are found in.......the USA
Who knows? Plenty of professional Soccer players continue their education during their careers. Only in England is it customary for players to drop out. I know that Juan Mata has two degrees from the Technical University of Madrid.
http://www.ucjc.edu/2014/08/juan-ma...eus-espana-y-la-universidad-camilo-jose-cela/ Fwiw, Mata is described here (Aug 2014) as a current university student in sports science. I saw earlier reports that said he was studying marketing, as well, but didn't see any indication that he finished. http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/spor...ews/liverpool-fcs-common-sense-keeper-4749356 Mignolet did finish at the Univ of Leuven.
U.S. international and Ivy League grad, Jeff Larentowicz: Larentowicz, a 2005 graduate of Brown University, received his second call up to the National Team, as he was previously called up in January 2010, but had a knee injury that did not allow his to complete camp. http://www.brownbears.com/sports/m-soccer/2010-11/releases/20110123zcocbm
Steve Birnbaum. Played four years at Cal and graduated. http://www.calbears.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=209374534
The college graduates on our 2016 Copa America roster: Bedoya Besler Birnbaum Cameron Wondolowski Zusi Showing the numbers are far from declining.
If we track those who had some college experience, it rises by how much? For example, I think Clint Dempsey had 3 years at Furman University, Guzan a couple at University of South Carolina, etc.....
The NCAA has a place where you can look up players. Then I went to school websites to read what the players majored in. Here's the information for the six players in Post 158 of this topic (the amount of detail the school provides for the degree and major varies from school to school): Bedoya: Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Boston College Besler: Pre-professional and Psychology from Notre Dame Birnbaum: Social welfare major from California Cameron: Communication studies from Rhode Island Wondolowski: Played for Chico State in Division II from 2001 to 2004. The Chico State website has information about him, but I was unable to find his major. Zusi: Criminology from Maryland
It would be interesting to see a list of Big Soccer posters who are college graduates and beyond . . .
There are a ton of BigSoccer posters, so it would be a long list. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Economics.
I will rep anyone who chooses to respond to this. I have an MED in Counseling and Specialized Education.
Degrees from the University I have enough. But such is the thread of the Fates that it is now Lost. Maybe I should have tried to be more professional in kicking that ball around.....
Special Ed apparently: "Wondolowski also learned a lot about himself. A Chico State soccer fan named David Prime, who has autism, sparked Wondolowski’s decision to pursue a degree in special education. He’s still working on that degree, taking classes during breaks in his soccer schedule." http://www.csuchico.edu/pub/cs/spring_11/feature_02.html
When it comes to soccer players and degrees, one of my favorites is Harald Bohr. An excellent mathematician, sure, any chump with half a wit and an ounce of creativity and a herculean work ethic can be that. Brother of Neil Bohr? Any lunkhead can luck into being the brother of someone nifty. But to be the lead striker on a team that beat France 17-1? Now that's worthy of Olympus.....
