From today's Washington Post, an article about the extent of US aid to Iraq, pre-Gulf War.

Uh, who didn't already know this? We armed Iraq because we hated Iran and Iraq was at war with them.

Newsflash - we also armed anti-Soviet Afghan rebels who eventually evolved into the Taliban.

True. Taken by the headline itself there's nothing exactly earth-shattering that's revealed.

What was new to me was to read just how cozy that Donald Rumsfeld had become with Hussein and his cronies.

If there's a Republican in the White House, Rumsfeld's a player in US foreign policy. This has been true since the Nixon administration.

Hell, Dubya's completely surrounded by recycled Republicans who've been political insiders for at least the last 20 years.

Did the article mention anything about the fact that Iraq was encouraged to attack Iran by Jimmy Carter?

No. It also didn't mention the fact that Eisenhower's CIA helped to overthrow Mossadegh, the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran, in 1953.
