From today's Washington Post, an article about the extent of US aid to Iraq, pre-Gulf War. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A52241-2002Dec29.html
Uh, who didn't already know this? We armed Iraq because we hated Iran and Iraq was at war with them. Newsflash - we also armed anti-Soviet Afghan rebels who eventually evolved into the Taliban.
True. Taken by the headline itself there's nothing exactly earth-shattering that's revealed. What was new to me was to read just how cozy that Donald Rumsfeld had become with Hussein and his cronies.
If there's a Republican in the White House, Rumsfeld's a player in US foreign policy. This has been true since the Nixon administration. Hell, Dubya's completely surrounded by recycled Republicans who've been political insiders for at least the last 20 years.
Did the article mention anything about the fact that Iraq was encouraged to attack Iran by Jimmy Carter?
No. It also didn't mention the fact that Eisenhower's CIA helped to overthrow Mossadegh, the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran, in 1953.
Saddam years ago got about 3 billions dollars from italian Banca Nazionale del Lavoro and these dollars have been spent in US to buy weapons. so US financed by italian money Iraq and american industries to at the same time. That money never has been returned to Banca Nazionale del Lavoro. Really a financial masterpiece ! Cordiali saluti a tutti ferruccyo ps.Excuse my poor english.I need exercise in writing.
