Yo! Is it just me or does anybody else think it's kinda reckless to be taking the futures of American Soccer (Convey, Adu, Rico Clark, Eddie Gaven, etc.)to go play in this years World Championships??!! Personally my feelings are FIFA care only about the money and not whether the lives of our U.S. players will be in danger! It should be apparent that a more neutral venue than UAE should be used... Is The Shogun wrong??! www.roadtothecup.com
The UAE is about as safe as you can get in that part of the world - Al-Qaeda never succeeded in recruiting people from there. The only way it's associated with terrorism is the same way Switzerland's associated with terrorism... hush-hush banking. (It's a little-known fact that most tinpot dictators have, in addition to a Swiss bank account, a UAE bank account.)
The UAE is safe. I don't think we will be in danger there. They are a small rich nation that is an ally to the USA.
Lock the whole team in a basement, throw a ball down there , and don't open it up until there's peace on earth. Problem solved!
There could also be a positive out of this. I'm sure the USA understands that this tournament is still in a generally sensitive area of the world, therefore a great deal of security will most certainly be around the American players. This goes without saying. But all this security and danger to them might very well be the kind of tonic that makes the media want to follow them around and really make a big story out of it. This could be some very valuable camera time and awareness for our future Nats, and get them some exposure for a very important tournament to the mainstream audience. I'm sure the security will be excellent, especially since we've already got so much personnel in the area. Every precaution will be taken to avoid a nasty international incident - bet on it. I just think that this could also be a big story, besides the Adu one, that gets our boys some more publicity, maybe even create a new fan or two if they take an interest in the soccer and not the politics.
UAE.... we knew for sure!!! 1) Sin city of Middle East where rich Arabs came to enjoy the sins of the Western world(alcohol, etc). It is well-known tourist destinations. 2) Actually known for its beautiful beach and bikini women. 3) Financial capital of the Middle East..... 4) Ally of the USA....as mentioned before. 5) A safe place.... low crime rate. The danger of the tournament will be same if it is held anywhere in the world. However, because of 1, 2 & 4, UAE is a more likely target than.... let's say Libya!!!
1) Sin city of Middle East where rich Arabs came to enjoy the sins of the Western world(alcohol, etc). It is well-known tourist destinations. 2) Actually known for its beautiful beach and bikini women. Thank God ol' Cletus Mathis ain't young enough to be on the team...
I've actually been to the UAE (Dubai) on a very short business trip, and although two of the 9-11 hijackers were from there, I agree that it's a relatively safe location.
Let's not confuse things... two of the 9-11 hijackers carried UAE passports. However, both were found to be forged. Among other things, UAE passports are notoriously easy to forge, making them quite popular among criminal organizations.
U-20 tv coverage Is the U-20 tournament gonna be broadcast live on tv? or tape delay? what networks will carry them? Can somebody post a link? thanks
Source? As far as I know it's pretty well established that Marwan al Shehi (sp?), one of the pilots who hit the WTC, was from the Emirates. I think news reports after 9/11 included interviews with his family members. The Emirates are an international transportation and commercial hub for the region. An al Qaeda operative definitely wired money to the 9/11 hijackers from the Emirates but that doesn't mean that UAE was a major staging area or planning venue for the attacks. Regardless of what Paul Wolfowitz and some other policy geniuses may think the 9/11 attacks were probably not a case of state-sponsored terrorism - so the nationality of the hijackers is relatively meaningless compared to the ideology and the trans-national organization that fostered the attack. I think there is a minor risk of a major catastrophe in holding the games in UAE. But I think they should still be held there. Increasing commercial, educational and cultural contacts between regions of the world is generally a good thing which can help lead us away from a "clash of civilizations" mindset.
If you want a catastophe, just wait till Greece next year at the Olympics... Greek security is surely an oxymoron...
Hey, are you stupid or just dumb? The crime rate is higher, the poverty is massively bigger, the living-standard is lower, the people are known for their VERY little knowledge of football and all the things happening in the world outside their country, their government is not democratic, their justice system is the same since many centuries, international terrorism is a much bigger danger, but still the FIFA decided to held a big tournament in 2003 there. So guess what country I have compared to the UAE????????
Re: Re: U-20's in United Arab Emirates -- Reckless??!! Nobody cares about your petty political views over here. Take it back to World Rivalries.
Perhaps his comment was a bit ignorant, but surely the US team presents an easier target to terrorist groups when it is playing in the Middle East.
You are totally right !! The sorry part about the matter is that the federation need to have more faith on the american soccer fans and bring the tournament to USA, right now we have a teen age fever on USA and a u-20 tournament could be a splash on the land of the free... But come on ! what are expecting from this soccer directives wanabees....
