Well, at least it was short enough so I didn't have to miss Walken on SNL. Nor did I pitch in $5 for PPV.

I enjoyed the exchange between Jim "So I'm An Ass" Gray and Iron Mike.

    It went something like:
    Mike: "My back is bwoken."
Jim: "What? You have a broken back?"
Mike: "That's right. My back is bwoken?"
    Jim: "Where is it broken?"
    Mike: "My back."
    Jim: "Is it your vertebrae?"
    Mike: "It's spinal."

    £14.99 it cost over here!

Did that $5 include any of the 'lesser' fights on the night?

I'm so glad I didn't spend £15 on 50 seconds of two out of shape boxers getting rich(er).

I think skip means pitching in $5 with some friends for the PPV. I think it was $24.99 for the undercards and the main event. I have Showtime, and they showed the main event at no cost.

    Ahh, that makes more sense.

I know we get screwed over prices here, cars, petrol, generally everything, but I thought us paying £15 whilst you guys paid £3 was a little off.

As it turns out I wouldn't have paid £3 for it either.

Just seen the knockout, that's pretty much the fight.

How else do you think the fight 'purse' would happen?

And besides, certain football matches here are PPV.

I make a point of never buying PPV sports events. It's only because they know some people will pay out for the privilege, that they keep on doing it.
If no-one bought the PPV for a boxing match, then surely a re-think would be required by the powers that be. If they know thay can hold you to ransom, they will. If you show you don't give a sh!t, what can they do?

That's what I meant. I should have been clearer.

I've watched Tyson vs Holyfield ("The Ear") and Tyson vs Botha on PPV. I believe both cost $50 after fees, but it's not so bad when you get enough people together.

Same thing me and my friends do. We pretty much have "fight nights" anytime a big fight is on PPV. We make a point to make some bets amongst eachother too, so usually I end up not paying anything for the fight and even make a few bucks.

Indeed, a heavyweight boxing title match is the biggest payday in sports. PPV is a huge part of this equation because of the revenue and exclusivity it creates.

In a sports marketing class I took back in college, we discussed the highest paid athletes in the US. In 1997, Tyson was paid $50 million, the top earner, or at least near the top. But unlike other well compensated athletes, Tyson got that $50 mill from one day of work and zero from endorsements.
The Q-rating determines a celebrity's attractivity as an endorser. Tyson's Q-rating is rock bottom.

Only football games that have minimal interest or otherwise wouldnt be shown in the USA. I think Boxing is big enough where it can get lots of Ad revenue. Maybe it wont be as much as PPV, but alot more people will be interested in the sport.

I mean I would love to watch those great boxers fight but theres no way in hell Im paying $25 to see 20 seconds worth of footage.

Do we really need a $50M purse? Wouldn't a $25M purse just be as good?

Well I guess people have been debating this for years and since Im not a big fan, I dont really care if its on or not. But if you want the opinion of a "joe sixpack" type then thats mine.

I certainly feel bad for those who forked over good money for PPV, only to get less than 1 round in the main event.

Boxing is indeed a sad sport.

I don't pay for PPV boxing, and don't plan on starting anytime soon. As noted, boxing is just too sad and ugly right now.

But if you could turn back the clock, or distribute some youth pills or whatever, I'd gladly pay to watch Frazier/Ali, Foreman/Norton, Liston/Patterson or any combination of the above. Heck, even watching Ali or Frazier kick the crap out of a Chuvalo or a Quarry was at least entertaining.

The problem is there just isn't anybody worth watching. This last "Raving Psychotic vs. Tomato Can" fight is a great example.

But SOMEBODY must be buying this trash. Tyson got five million and Etienne a million just for stepping into the ring. Granted Robin Givens will end up with most of that, but it's still a decent payday.

Tyson also owes Showtime some cash. I heard SOME national radio talk show guy (cannot remember his name) who said that if Tyson saw ANY of that money, considering all the debts he has, he would be shocked.

More choice quotes from an interview before the Lewis fight:

"There's no one perfect. We're always gonna do that. Jimmy Swaggart is lascivious, Mike Tyson is lascivious -- but we're not criminally, at least I'm not, criminally lascivious. You know what I mean. I may like to fornicate more than other people -- it's just who I am. I sacrifice so much of my life, can I at least get laid? I mean, I been robbed of my most of my money, can I at least get (oral sex) without the people wanting to harass me and wanting to throw me in jail?

"That's just who I am. I want to have a nice career for my children. I want them to have a great education I want to fly my birds. I want to live my life. I want to have a drink every now and then. I want to have a charity event every now and then. And every now and then, I want to fornicate and that's just being a human being.

So, anyone going to watch Roy Jones, Jr and Ruiz? That is a freak show, but an interesting freak show.

I mean, it is not as freaky as 43 midgets pulling a tank or something, but freaky.

That event could well destroy my PPV boycott.

I got home today and check my answer machine. Who called you ask?

Well, nobody other than Roy Jones, Jr himself.

It was so weird. I wasn't really paying attention, but I heard some jive brother talking all hard on my machine.

    I listened again.

He asked me to watch his fight!

Wierd, but cool. Not Michael Vick cool, but cool. :)
