I'd be curious who the 10th is. I've been keeping track of players who have started in the Champions League knockout stages, but adding Reyna and Adams to that list only brings me to 9. John O'Brien (Ajax) - QF Damarcus Beasley (PSV) - SF Landon Donovan (Bayer Leverkusen) - Round of 16 Tim Howard (Manchester United) - Round of 16 Jermaine Jones (Schalke) - QF Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund) - QF Weston McKennie (Schalke) - Round of 16 Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund) - Round of 16 Tyler Adams (Red Bull Leipzig) - Round of 16 Dooley played in the Round of 16 of the old European Cup, but the format was pretty different (for example, after the Round of 16, there was then a group stage). The missing name could be Giuseppe Rossi at Villarreal, but if you're including non-USMNT Americans, then you'd probably also have to include Neven Subotic, who started a Champions League final, and that would bring you to 11.
Not to be a dick, but why didn't you just copy the word and paste it in Google? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defender_(association_football)#Sweeper_(libero)
Before Adams played: I didn’t expect this list to be extensive, but I’m still kind of surprised just how short it is. Here’s the complete list of Americans who have played in the Champions League quarterfinals. Both Tyler Adams and Gio Reyna could be in position to join them after this week. pic.twitter.com/zRnCAovfR0— natfan9.bsky.social (@NatFan9) March 10, 2020
Just a guess but it could be Fabian Johnson with Gladbach in 2015/2016. They were in the group stages
1237497670979203074 is not a valid tweet id Adams one shot is blocked on the lead up to the last goal
Anyway, Tyler with a 6.51 from WhoScored. Good(ish) grade, but second lowest on the team. Seems about right. Only player with a lower passing % was the guy he replaced, so RDM seems to have been a trouble position for RBL in the match.
Would someone here please confirm that Adams was able to get out of bed today and walk around without any outside assistance. Thanks in advance!
He seemed a bit rusty which is kind of to be expected. Missed a few simple passes and a couple of his attempts at thru balls. He did pretty well on D... but got caught out of position once or twice. One thing that was very heartening though is that his pace looked undiminished. Great bursts of speed on display several times. There is a lot of competition on that team for the positions he plays... so it is a great sign that Nagelsmann gave him the nod when Nordi went down.
I'm glad for the comparison as I thought RBL was ok with some hopeful long passes from defenders. Adams just did what the others were doing - passing accurately short and not as accurate on long probing passes. RBL plays fast and are OK chasing down some hopeful balls occasionally. A couple gave Tottenham fits as they misplayed them. I like how they mix up control with chaos. Think the US could play like them.
By the time Adams came in, Tottenham's spirit were crushed and the whole game was just "will the get a goal for Werner?" Adams wasn't tasked with playing a conservative game, and he had some lost passes on hopeful attacks. Can't look at the passing % in that game situation. It is the opposite of "late and close".
Let me tell you everyone it's NOT. It's not Onyewu with Sporting. It's not Adu with Benfica. It's not Claudio with Rangers. It wasn't Edu at Rangers. It wasn't Feilhaber at Hamburg. Could it have been Hejduk with Leverkusen? He was key for them his first half season, but became an afterthought very quickly. Could it have been Friedel with Liverpool? Probably not; Wikipedia just credits him with the UEFA Cup. I'm gonna lose my damn mind now.
