I always check to see if US games are being broadcast on Telemundo or Galavision before resigning to the ESPNs, and I don't speak spanish. Regardless of his claim that the first goal against Venezuela was a great no-call, I think ESPN desperately needs to update their American crew or just start letting their international crews handle our national team games (no patriotism would be lost to letting better qualified annoucers handle our boys). By the way, who is the English gentleman who does the Champions League games with Tommy Smyth? He is the best of those on ESPN.
For anyone who may be interested, the U.S.-Venezuela match is being shown on Telemundo today (Sunday 3/30) at 4PM ET. They may be showing the tape at different times in different areas, so check your local listings. By the way, at 1PM ET, they are showing Colombia-Korea. I believe it is live.
First of all, Tommy Smyth is Irish and he's terrible. I agree that Ty is crap. Telemundo's team can be a breath of fresh air but normally they are condescending, professorial bozos.
I think danjeb is referring to Mike Hill who sometimes partners Tommy Smyth. Anyways, regarding ty keogh, I can't believe there isn't a better guy to do the USMNT broadcasts for espn/abc. Essentially he is no more than a "professional amateur" who often interjects with useless facts (i.e. I don't need to be reminded that BM20 had a spell at everton everytime he touched the ball yesterday), and when asked by Rob Stone about what position he'd like to see O'Brien in, his response was to the order of "he plays a lot of positions". Thanks for the great analysis.
No way. Tommy is the man. At least JP Dellacamera will be doing opening day, the all-star game, and MLS Cup.
OK, I'll spell it out... He should apologize for being an ass and not just claiming the call against Venezuela was a good no-call (I wouldn't mind if he missed it once), but for saying it EVERY REPLAY. He should resign his post as USMNT colorman because he obviously isn't the best at it (he isn't even the best at it on the station we are force to watch these games live) and doesn't deserve it. I think I was refferring to Rob Stone if he does most of the Champions League games. Lets get him and the Guy who is always doing Color for the Spanish teams whenever they play on ESPN.
why should I have to miss all the crowd and field noise just because our annoucers suck? are you saying that he is the best and I shouldn't whine about it or that he is what I have to live with because I have no imput and I shouldn't whine about it? I don't believe that I'm the only one who thinks our announcers blow, so why don't we all let ESPN know? Maybe new better guys who bring your level of enjoyment up...... unless this is Ty himself.
The Telemundo announcers were calling the nocall on U.S. first goal a travesty and the biggest noncall in International play history.
For the 100th time, it's your ignorant attitude that keeps soccer from becoming popular. For the 1000th time, choosing to watch Telemundo or Univision over ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2 will not help the cause of American soccer. If you have no choice and have no cable, I can understand.
Re: Re: Re: Ty Keough should apologize, then resign Because ESPN and ABC are companies (actually one big one, but I digress) who are in it to make money. The higher the ratings the more money is put into production and the better people we get calling the game. Also the higher the ratings, the more likely they are to show more games, which would lead to higher ratings, and so on and so forth.
Re: Re: Re: Ty Keough should apologize, then resign Also because it's actually in English. No one will pay attention to a sport if it's not in English telecast.
Mike Hill The English guy that you heard on ESPN's Champions League coverage was Mike Hill. He is no longer with ESPN and has been replaced with JP Dellacamera. Mike Hill can now be heard on Setanta. Nick
You'd really take Spanish over english commentary that every once in a while isn't excellent? Wow. I don't htink they're great, but they're not that bad.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Ty Keough should apologize, then resign On the other hand, if there is really a large English speaking soccer audience that watches soccer matches only on Telemundo or Univision, ESPN (or whatever) will know that it is an audience that it should recapture by having better commentators. The bottom line is whether there is a large enough English speaking soccer audience for ESPN to worry about. Currently, the answer is mostly no.
I convinced my brother, who has cable but is not a huge soccer fan, to give up on the NCAA tournament for a moment and have me over to watch the US - Venezuela game. I explained a bunch of stuff to him about who played on which club teams and why I thought Arena's substitutions were brilliant. I was shocked that Ty or Rob would then say almost the same thing moments later. See, I was trying to explain the national team and the game to a relative newbie. And that's why Ty and Rob wound up echoing me. I don't think ESPN should have to keep doing this. That's one of the reasons why their crew is so dull. Regarding the level of commentary, American broadcasters force the US soccer fan to ride on the short yellow bus with those who don't know the game. I think from a marketing standpoint, it's time to increase the expectation for soccer savvy amongst veiwers. Firing Ty is a great place to start, but only if he's replaced by someone like Dir. Now, if Ty keeps his job, do what I did and find someone to talk with during the whole game. The sound will be there for field noise, but your own conversation will drown out the prattle from the special-ed teacher in the booth.
ESPN unfairly singled out Jack Edwards for re-assignment. Now Jack sucked, big-time. But Ty is every bit his equal in suckage. And yes, there are MANY people where I live who switch to Univision or Telemundo when we just can't take it any more.
It's time to get hockey announcers in. They can learn the sport easily and already have the right intensity an rhythm to calling a soccer game. It would be great to get a guy like Gary Thorne or Howie Rose doing PBP. As for color comment, Wynalda did a great job from the sidelines. Bring him up in the booth Announcing is not the only problem. I've seen better camera work for a St. John's (university, not Canada) soccer game. A couple of rules to follow. 1) The ball is big and round. Do not fear any shot narrower than the widest stadium shot you have. 2) No coach interviews. Bruce has a job to do. 3) The graphics were too busy. Tone it down Blah blah blah. Anyone doing a national game should be forced to watch a weeks worth of FSW. ESPN bites....Why do almost half of the Metros gamse this year have to be on it To sum up.. Hockey announcers good, ESPN bad Thank You
