Saw this Q&A from a LA Times interview with Garber... do you think two LA teams would get the needed support? An interesting scenario, I thought. here is the excerpt... Q: Looking at Los Angeles, there are the Dodgers/Angels, Lakers/Clippers, Kings/Ducks, UCLA/USC. Why not the Galaxy and someone else sharing the Home Depot Center and creating some local rivalry? A: I think that potential exists. It's certainly something we're looking closely at. It's not something that is as much a priority for us in the short term as expanding the footprint of the league and getting more cities involved and commensurately more fans involved. But we haven't ruled it out. It's simply a matter of timing. If it turns out that's the most effective way for us to expand the league, then we are not opposed to it. We just are hopeful we can have more cities involved before we double up in current markets.
If the league wre to get near 20 teams, you might see MLS try to capitalize on the Home Depot Center in duplicate. Not a completely outrageous plan, but I don't like it for at least 8-10 more years.
8 - 10 years? I was thinking more like 20 if current business & marketing trends continue. I think that's how long it would take the Galaxy to build and maintain a healthy fanbase that will contiunually support the team. By doing this, you may see a demand for another team in the LA area.
Another benefit of this plan: It would give Grahame Jones twice as many teams to ignore, dis, or make fun of because they aren't EPL.
