From the Arizona Republic on May 7, 2004 (Google cache): "Two players from last year's Arizona team, Dan Gottvald and Eric Tate, are playing in a first division pro league in Luxemburg. (sic)" Can anyone find these players?
I thought Luxembourg was one of those nations with one team, which played cross border, sorta like the New Zealand team plays in Australia, or Monaco plays in France. But I could be wrong.
What "Arizona" team? The University of Arizona has no team, nor does ASU or Northern Arizona. There is a D-II school in Phoenix called Grand Canyon that has a men's soccer team so maybe that could be it. And there's a good JuCo program, Yavapai, in Prescott, near Sedona, that sends lots of players to DI programs and has a couple of former players in MLS. Also, there are no Arizona teams in the USL's system. Could they mean an ODP team from Arizona?
Nahh, Luxembourg has a league. It's called the Division Nationale The standings right now have my old city's team atop the table... 1. Dudelange 2. Etzella 3. Jeunesse 4. Rosport 5. Hesperange 6. Petange 7. Alliance 8. Grevenmacher 9. Wiltz 10. Spora 11. Avenir 12. Union You can find information about the clubs and links to the sites at Luxembourg Football Association
Luxembourg has their own first division, from the people I've talked to who've are a) letzsebuergsch or b) actually seen a game (not too many of those) it's about equivalent of the german 5th divison.
Men's Premier Soccer League... it's a West Coast amateur league at about the same level as the PDL, and also recognized as Div 4.
According to the Sahuaros' roster, those players last club was 'Germany', although they both went to college in the US.
What, they don't have a second division? No promotion and relegation? That's not a real league. (that was sarcasm) My friends in Luxembourg would go see FC Metz in the French league when they wanted to see soccer, it was only about 30 miles away.
Yes, the time it takes to make a cross country trip through Luxembourg depends on what shoes you're wearing and how long your stop for lunch is... These guys will fight it out with the guys from Nepal and the guys from Turks & Caicos for the title of most obscure Yanks Abroad...
I tried to input this yesterday but got a busy signal -- anyway, I emailed the Sahuaros yesterday and we'll see if I get a response.
I think this may be the only place in the world where I could read a discussion about two former U.S. 3rd Division soccer players plying their trade in Europe. The correct facial expression to define this thread would be a mix between and
