anyway ladies! back to the question at hand

is it a 2-horse race yet? of course not - the seasons only half over - naturally injuries and things can occur - IMHO arsenal will probably keep a cushion tho and man u are as good a bet as any for second

if i had to pick a 3rd favorite, ill take chelsea (unless the toon bring in a top defender or two)

the juicier race may well be for the CL and UEFA spots

interesting to see if southampton, everton, blackburn or man citeh can make europe

or if leeds can salvage their year for that matter

Before you boys start actually measuring your dicks, I thought I'd throw in my tuppence worth.

I think it is now a two horse race between ourselves and Man U. Liverpool have problems beating Sheffield United, never mind mixing it with the best in the Premiership. And I thought Chelsea had found a level of consistency only to have a bad Christmas period. from my point of view, I think the extra depth in the Arsenal and United squads will mean that these are the top two teams at the end of the season, both teams seem to struggle less when players are absent or off form than either Chelsea or Liverpool.

What can i say, old habits sometimes die hard.

However, i do agree with you somewhat about the two horse race. Our "bad" christmas was really only the droped points at home to the saints. The other two fixtures were really on the "not likely to win" list anyways, so to say we had a bad period because these two games were back to back is a little unfair i think.

As for the strength in depth there can be little or no question that we are lacking in this department compared to the Arse and Mancs. That difference is little or nothing at all when compared to the others though.
Chelsea will push further as the season goes on and will take 3rd place i expect. The toon are doing well on the back of a fantastic home record, but, as we proved two seasons ago a good home record is only good enough for about a top 6 finish. To be in the Cl spots away wins are a must.Saints look strong and may take that 4th spot.Toon and 'pool to round out the top 6.

For the third and fourth spots, I'd say it's between Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle. These three just have better players than the rest of the division. And while Southampton are playing well at the moment, I can't really see them sustaining a Champions League place challenge until the end of the season. If a key player such as Beattie got injured, who would replace him? They just haven't got the resources of the other three.

I don't think it's a two horse race just yet, but it's close. But it's not going to be Chelsea to make it a 3 horse race having dropped 11 back of Arsenal.

Now that Newcastle has made up their game in hand and converted the points, they're only 7 back of Arse. So for now, they're still in it.

These next 2 or 3 games are going to determine if Newcastle can stay in the race.

If Liverpool does ManU and Newcastle a favor and either wins or draws at home against Arse next week, then ManU and Newcastle could both stay in the race. However, Newcastle there's no easy task for Newcastle to take advantage of such a stumble by Arse as they have to travel to Tottenham.

I'd say that Everton and Tottenham are both still in the running for the 4th spot, if not the 3rd. Southhampton's best hope at this point is probably one of the 2 Uefa spots.

There's a long way to go. What happened to Liverpool can happen to Arsenal and/or Man Utd.

The fat lady hasn't even come on to the stage yet :)

The notion that the EPL is a 2 horser is pants!...there's a long way to go and anything can happen, a defeat and a couple of draws would derail Arsenal, a run of wins would bolster Liverpool...it ain't over until the obese wench warbles.

Do you really think that's the case?

I'm not totally 100% on the issues involved with Liverpool, but was some of their problems due to having a number of new and young players that didn't seem to be gelling and weren't stepping up to the EPL level? That combined with a few key injuries?

If that's correct, then I don't think ManU or Arse would be subject to the same downfall. They don't have a lot of youth or inexperience in their lineups and they have been able to maintain their form through their injuries. Heck, you could argue that ManU has been bitten harder by the injury bug than Liverpool.

It's conceivable that each could stumble a few times, but it's also likely that the teams chasing will stumble too.

So, IMO, it's a 3 horse race, very soon to become a 2 horse race for the title.

Utd fell behind by a few points early in the season and it could happen again. Lose RvN and Solskjaer say to injury when the transfer window is finished and Utd could fall away again with no trouble.

Arsenal have also shown that they can drop form and so far this season haven't yet had a bad time with injuries I don't think (no doubt someone will tell me that isn't so :) )

There's a lot of matches to play yet and there's no doubt that Arsenal and Utd are favourites to take the title but Newcastle are only 2 points I think behind Man Utd and I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't yet to play both teams. A couple of wins and a Man Utd win at Arsenal and you almost have a new table.

I hope not, of course, but it not beyond the bounds of possibility.
