Are Mastroeni and Grimandi both defensive midfielders?

Nominally, yes. Although I imagine they'll cover for eachother when one goes forward.

The Rapids will have a midfield that won't have very rigid roles. Each player will simply be a set of skills and abilities, to be used to best effect in each situation.

I agree. Unlike last year, when we had an immobile playmaker, this year's midfield should be fluid and aggressive.

Hankinson in a southern, military drawl addressing the mids:

"You men will be agile, mobile, and hostile. You will assault down the flanks, through the middle, and over through your opponents. Any attack that attempts to go around or through any or each of you must and will be terminated. You will lay your bodies down for each other and the glory of the Rapids. Do you understand?"
