    From the Boston Globe:

Twellman, 22, is earning the MLS minimum salary - less than $30,000 annually - on a three-year, non-guaranteed contract that can be renegotiated after each year. Sharon has labeled his client ''the best bargain in the history of the league.''

My point is that it's ridiculous that he went into the SuperDraft. When we offered him a discovery contract, I'd bet it was for more than that.

Unless he really didn't want to play for KC. Remember, we've had two people retire rather than take a contract with us.

No, he was going to play, the MLS just refused to let him come to us becuase they wanted him in the SuperDraft.

And that quote says it "can" be renegotiated at the end of the year? Change that to "It will" be negotiated at the end of the year.

It was Gansler who convinced him to come home. Plus, he is from the St. Louis area. Why wouldn't he want to come here?

Let's see how many potential MLS screwovers are up to by now?

1 Possibly Twellman as stated above
2 Lalas retires, oops wait we'll let LA discover him a year later even though his contract would've still been active through the league with us.
3 Mo's Retirement - This would've been critical for the Dispersal draft by the way
4 I bet we get screwed on the "When Preki Retires" one as well.
5 Didn't we recruit Igor originally only to have Colorado get their chance first but then they had just signed the guy who showed up so out of shape they canned him 3 days later and had to pass for us to get him?
6 All league contracts should now stipulate if you retire do to a trade, players pay a penalty and the team gets their original trade back.
7 How many times do we have to watch LA CHI NY & DC before we get one KC DAL COL CBS Soccer Saturday? I understand the markets but it's like a freakin 4 to 1 ratio. Was it NE NY they aired in two consecutive weeks?
8 Did we get anything for Molnar's retirement?

I'm sure I'm off on a few of these and someone will correct me but there's a track record regardless.

Yeah, but try as they might, they couldn't prevent us from taking the MLS Cup. Even in 20 years one of the original teams will more likely than not have one.

You shouldn't be so hard on LA.

    4. I hope not, CJ said we wouldnt, but who knows.
    5. Actually Igor was courted by Colorado way before we had public knowledge about it, but all the rest you say is true.
    6. players shouldn't be penalized, but the team that traded them should be made to have some sort of consideration.
    7. I agree, but markets are markets, and large markets = more money theoretically.
    8. We got a allocation which we used on Lowe.

We *will* get an allocation for Preki. It's unavoidable. MLS apparently has a formula of sorts to determine who gets allocations for what players...it includes number of MLS Best XI appearances, MVPs, etc. We'll get one for Preki.

    ERIC DADE screwed us.

"Kansas City Wizards defender Eric Dade announced today he is retiring from professional soccer. Dade, 32, was acquired by the Wizards from the Dallas Burn last Tuesday in exchange for the Wizards natural 5th round draft pick in the 2002 SuperDraft (54th overall)."

The other one I can't remember his name but it was fairly close in time frame. Anyone else remember?

Actually I think there was a player who retired rather than play for the Burn in the same time frame. I don't recall a second Wizard retiree.

The other player was Baicher via San Jose before the 2000 season. Bet he was happy he didn't get a chance to hoist the Cup.

And if you trade for a player and he retires, oh well, too bad. You can't penalize the player for retiring, I'm sure you couldn't do it legally. You can't penalize the team because it's not their fault the player decided to retire. The trade shouldn't be reversed because then you always have to go and ask the player "Hey, if we trade you are you going to reture?" If it's someplace they don't want to go... "Uhhhhh.... yeah! So don't trade me." It's essentially a no-trade clause.

But with the scenario of AJ Wood...
    - DC trades him to KC for whatever...
    - AJ bombs training camp intentionally to get cut
    - AJ goes back and signs with DC and KC gets screwed.

That was a bad bad thing to happen in the MLS and I hope the execs told DC that they better not F'ing do something like that again, as well as the other teams who might have been thinking about doing something like that. Same thing with the Mutts and Faria.
