This is the official TV Episode Draft thread. Picks and discussion of picks go in here. Here is the order of selection: 1 Felixx219 2 Matt in the Hat 3 Belgian guy 4 Naughtius Maximus 5 That Phat Hat 6 Dante 7 Norsk Troll 8 Val1 9 Uppa 90 10 Demosthenes 11 spejic 12 JeremyEritrea 13 petezuke17 14 Matrim55 15 Ismitje 16 afgrijselijkheid 17 Cweedchop 18 ThreeApples Others may join in without penalty before the first round is over.
Here are the rules of the draft. They are slightly modified from the ones proposed in the sign-up thread. 1. This will run by standard BigSoccer draft rules. Each person will, in turn, get an exclusive time to pick which will last until they pick or for 12 hours, whichever happens first. If you do not pick in your 12 hour slot, you can pick any time after that but other people can go on with their selections. If you have already missed a pick, then you do not get further 12 hour slots until you have caught up in your selections. There will be 8 rounds. If you know you will not be able to pick during your slot, you can have another BigSoccer poster do a proxy vote for you (your best bet would be the person ahead or behind you in the draft). 2. When you make a selection, send a PM to the next person in the pick order. We are using standard pick order - when the last person in the order picks, the first person in the order is the next to pick. 3. People can join the draft without penalty until the first round ends. If you join after the game has started you will be placed at the end of the order. 4. This draft will be for selection of Television "episodes". An episode is a individual narrative unit of a scripted made-for-TV series. The concept of "made-for-TV" follows the rules laid down in the TV series draft (so it, for example, includes shows that were not actually broadcast). Series means a group of shows with some form of character/plot/setting continuity between episodes, so no anthology series. 5. Documentaries, game shows, reality shows (even scripted ones), and variety shows cannot be selected. Miniseries or stand-alone made for TV movies also cannot be selected. An individual example of a series of made-for-TV movies (for example, a single movie from the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes movie series) can be selected from. You can also select made-for-TV movies that are part of a TV program's continuity, but not made-for-theatre movies. 6. You can select a multi-part episode as a single pick if the narrative of the shows are clearly part of the same immediate story (usually indicated by "to be continued" at the end of the earlier parts). You must be reasonable with this rule - you cannot select an entire season even if all the episodes of the season take place, say, continuously over a single day. 7. It is helpful to provide pictures or video or explanatory links (to Wikipedia articles or the like) with your picks, but it is not required. 8. I will moderate the draft. Rules are civil law, not criminal law - my emphasis will be on speed and smooth operation. Aggrieved parties may object to rule violations (including the spirit of the draft, not just the letter of the law), and after a discussion I will rule.
Sorry, must have read over that when I skimmed the rules. I assume that the proxy post can also be done by a poster who is not participating in the draft?
9. Ismitje, though picking last, may, at any given single point in the draft, abuse his SUperModerator powers by editing out picks that other people made of episodes he wishes were part of his draft, and replace them with episodes from Yes, Dear.
Round 1 Pick: Six Feet Under - Everyone's Waiting Series Finale - Season 5, Episode 13 - 63rd overall episode August 21, 2005 Warning: Do not watch this clip if you plan on watching Six Feet Under someday [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNwARV9tPUw"]Sia - Breathe Me (Six Feet Under Finale) - YouTube[/ame] This is by far the best finale of any show I have ever seen and possibly the best single episode of television I have seen. This is the one TV show I have watched where I actually miss the characters even though it has been a couple of years since I finished the series. I watched this entire series by DVD and ended up watching this episode 3 times before sending it back. The finale was powerful, poetic, and more representative of life than anything I have seen on a screen. If you have never watched Six Feet Under, I strongly recommend doing so.
I watched and appreciated the first season for its ruthless deconstruction of an obvious TV trope - "Death is always dramatic." I stopped watching a few episodes into the second season when it turned into maudlin crap.
Ahh excellent pick. This was actually in my top 3 choices damn you. I think the song really ties it in together well.
The first half of the second season is rough. Honestly, I thought about stopping then too but I stuck with it and I am glad I did. You should really go back to it. You get through those few episodes and it returns to form.
I too am ordering my picks based on what is most likely to be picked first by someone else. Which means most Euro/Belgian shows will be towards the end of the thread. I'd be shocked if I lose one of those.
Yep, always good to have those Belgian shows to fall back on. Of course, you're really going to have to explain them. So where's Matt? It's been almost two hours...
Round 1 Pick: M*A*S*H - "Abyssinia, Henry" Season 3, Episode 24 March 18, 1975 [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VY4qSh3UWIU"]TV Tearjerkers #2: M*A*S*H's Abyssinia, Henry - YouTube[/ame] "I have a message. Lieutenant Colonel... Henry Blake's plane... was shot down... over the Sea of Japan. It spun in... there were no survivors." Easily one of the biggest shocks in TV history and it still stands up today.
Great episode. But such an obvious choice ... This has to be one of the slowest kickoffs to a draft I've ever been in. Nearly 4 hours in, and only two picks - doesn't bode well for the later rounds.
Man, do I hate that TV show. Even hearing the theme song to MASH wants to make me start throwing things. I never understood the appeal of that show.
Objects in Space – Firefly season one, episode 14 I was always going to pick a Firefly episode in this, though it took me long to decide upon which one. I eventually settled upon the season finale, which barely beat out one other episode (which I won’t mention here to not ruin someone else’s possible pick). [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyAmRfhdxZ8"]Am I a Lion? - YouTube[/ame] The writing here is fantastic. The brilliant exchange between Simon and Jubal after the bounty hunter “mishears” the doctor is just one of the many examples of the sparkling dialogue. Then there is Early having the shepherd pegged for what he truly within moments of meeting him, Inara finding out the hard way that all her Companion training is useless on Jubal, the brilliant dead-panned last words, the wording and delivery of the rape threat, … It’s Whedon at his very best, tout court. It goes n°1 because it's the one thing on my list I am certain of being threatened by 3-4 of the other participants.
That's the episode I would pick, and that's the exact clip I would use to demonstrate the episode's awesomeness.
We never should have allowed the Brits into this draft with their silly Greenwich Mean-ish time zone. There's a reason Hulu doesn't allow non-Americans.
I love nearly every episode of the first three seasons. In fact, I may pick one. It gradually becomes much more spotty, too obvious and preachy after Henry dies.
Actually, I'm the opposite - I only like the stuff after Burns leaves. -- And for everyone, afgrijselijkheid has asked to join the game. He picks in the 16th slot after Ismitje.
