is such a great word. But I digress.

Who can recommend a good one, how much should I expect to spend, etc., etc.

    Thanks in advance!

The best ones on the planet are the 1200s made by Technic. Mid $700 for one though.

I wish it were DJ use, but alas. Home use. Also: I'm poor. Just to narrow it down a little....

Then I'm not much help, but maybe the good folks at Audio Review can point you in the right direction:

My Bang and Olafson has served me well for 20 years. You can mosh in front of it and it never hear a skip. Alas, the styluses seem to be getting harder to find and more expensive.

For my money Technics makes the best turntable out there. Just make sure you get a direct drive as opposed to a belt drive(if you can even find one)
Belt drives are like dinosaurs but it's always good to ask especially if you're buying used.

Get a belt drive turntable and a Grado cartridge. Rega Planar 3 Turntable is around $ 300-400 on the used market. Excellent TT. Rega Planar 2 around $ 200-300. Any of the Grado's cartriges in the $ 100 - 200 range is good. Moving magnet type. Evern the sub $100 Grados are pretty good. I would go with a Grado Gold model. Also a record cleaning brush and some cleaning fluid is necessary too. A sorbathane mat placed on the platter made by Audioquest helps to smooth out the sound and less hiss.

Thanks much, everybody. I really appreciate it! I should have just ganked my dad's Technics when I was there in July...

I'll use the advice to start skulking around for one.

I like the JA Michell Gyrodec with a Rega 900 tonearm, but that'll set you back ~$3,000

The Music Hall MMF 2.1 is probably the best deal for the money ($300 US) IMO
