Turkey to host Euro 2020? Turkey has received an unofficial promise from the UEFA President, Michel Platini, to host the 2020 European Football Championships, according to Türker Arslan, the vice chairman of Turkey’s National Olympic Committee (TMOK). He revealed the news during a panel in Antalya, that the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) chairman Mehmet Ali Aydınlar got the word from Platini, the head of the continental governing body of the game. “Mr. Aydınlar has told me that UEFA President Platini promised him that Turkey will host Euro 2020,” Arslan said. “They really believe that they will win the bid.” Turkey lost to France in the race to host Euro 2016. After France won the bid in 2010 there was heavy criticism toward Platini with claims that he favored his country. Arslan’s remarks came during a speech in which he was talking about Istanbul’s preparations for the bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games.
I support Turkey to host Euro 2020, however after the tragic incidents occured on 12.05.2012(Fenerbahce against Galatasaray), I believe that the chances of Turkey to host the organization is dipping.
In principle, I very much welcome Turkey hosting the tournament. I'm not sold on the practicality of the Celtic bid (much as the idea appeals to me being half-Scottish by birth). But does a country with such serious issues facing its domestic game deserve the reward of the EURO? How serious are the Turkish FA and government in fighting the ugliness that mars an otherwise rising league?
It would be fantastic if Turkey host Euro 2020. I am all for it... With all the new stadia, passionate football fans and fantastic touristic attractions, it would be wonderful for everyone.
