Boston Globe Online: As tensions and protests mount on campuses over war in Iraq, Tufts University alumni leaders have revoked an award given to a senior because of her ''inappropriate and offensive'' behavior during a recent campus protest of former President George H.W. Bush. The university's Alumni Association - an independent group with close ties to Tufts leaders - has accused the student, Elizabeth E. Monnin, of making a vulgar hand gesture at Bush as he chided her and other protesters who disrupted his remarks about the 1991 Gulf War. Alumni officials said the gesture and other jeers made Monnin ineligible for the association's Senior Award, one of the highest student honors on campus... ...For Monnin, the loss of the Senior Award was perhaps predictable, since much of her campus leadership centered on organizing confrontational protests... ...In an interview yesterday, she accused Tufts officials of ''silencing'' her because they disapproved of her spirited protests against war... ''...People in power don't have to get out and rally to make their points - they can do things like take an award away from a student who is making an argument they don't support,'' Monnin said.
Nice stretch. You've been drawing strange conclusions from articles lately. Ok, so it's not only lately, it's been forever.
I know, I remember this one time I read about Bin Laden tapes, and I assumed he was dead and it was a secret CIA plot to make everyone think he was still alive.
She made an obscene gesture at a guest of the University and a former US President. She's clearly an embarassment to her school, and doesn't deserve any award. And I would say the same thing if she'd flicked off Clinton. Alex
At least she didn't call him a "major league asshole" Then we'd have to appoint her President of the United States.
Tuftshit, bitch. She learned a valuable life lesson. You piss off the wrong people (school, work, community) you sometimes get fvcked in return.
Tuft's Education: $60,000 Senior Award plaque: $60 Tuft University Bulldog's t-shirt: $16 Flipping off GWB after he disses you: Priceless. (Granted, its the wrong Bush, but its a much finer story if its to the younger. Senior Bush is, as they say, twice the man.)
Exactly.. This is probably her best "education" for her years spent at Tufts. A practical life lesson... A kick in the arse like this is what many of these college kids need for thinking they know it all, and can fly off the handle without consequences.... They dont need hand holding by the bleeding hearts..
Did you read her quote? She didn't learn anything. She made the point that the people in power can make these decisions -- she weighed it and wasn't particularly surprised by the outcome. The message is that institutions can't handle when you push the edge of the envelope. I am not blaming who ever gave the award. But apart from Mr. Pizzas stab at lukewarm misogyny, I doubt she cares about any pleasure these guys may have gotten from withholding the award.
