MLS conks head against goalpost on tiebreaker
    Soccer America

I'm glad somebody finally suggested this. I don't even know if it's mentioned in the official "tiebreaker rules" thread, but it seems like such an obvious way to decide things.

I say the more ways teams can be rewarded for winning games the better.

Only if you want a tiebreaker that will very rarely (if ever) come into play.

On a lighter note ..Brazilian Football Officials claim that their players were distracted by this Mexican woman posing as a Brazilian athlete during the Gold Medal match..

    According to what source?

The original Soccer America article clearly points out that such a tiebreaker would "ever" come into play.

Furthermore, a quick search of the final standings from the 2006-2011 MLS seasons showed me that of the six times teams were tied in points at the end of the season, only once did they both have the same number of wins.

It could come into play quite a lot. If one used it as the first tiebreaker, you just think of it as changing the points system to 3/0.9999999999999999/0

Honestly? It seemed like a reasonable guess, and contrary to my usual form, I wasn't in the mood to do the research myself, so I was hoping that if I worded my statement appropriately, I'd motivate someone else to do the leg work. :D I'm glad someone did, so I'm okay with being shown to have been wrong (though I will note that we're working with a small sample size here). The number becomes 3/10 if you extend back to 2002 (I don't know how to treat the 3 divisions of 2001, so I'm not going further).

This might be something interesting to run a simulation of.

Wait... isn't the base of the goal posts in the clip lower than usual?

I've never seen the two compared quite like that before.
