Heracles Almelo of the Eredivisie. Former UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, LA Galaxy and Canadian national team forward Rob Friend used to play for them.
Bernardeschi signed a 5-year contract with the Toronto FC. In 2024, he will earn a base salary of $3,125,000, while carrying a cap hit of $6,295,381. For what he is getting paid, he should be dominating MLS but that isn’t the case. He simply has not been good enough! When Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi first signed with TFC, they both thought it would have an easy ride. This just shows how difficult MLS has become and is and there is no way of knowing until they get here. Knowing Italy and Italian players as I do because I lived and worked there, the mentality and perception of the league is that ot is an inferior level. In comparison to the Serie A, it may very well be but that doesn’t mean it is an easy, cake walk league. Last year there was an excuse that Bob and Michael Bradley were the problem but this year as they both left, there shouldn't have been any reason on why they couldn’t at least make the playoffs. I keep hearing rumors on Radio Sportiva from Italy that he may go back to Italy come January but not sure anyone will cover his MLS salary unless it is on loan. He may be a player who is stuck in Toronto and at a crossroads.
I have loved Heracles Almelo’s current badge ever since they introduced it 9 years ago. Just simple, straightforward design. The black and white stripes of their traditional home kit, the club’s name and year of founding, a terrific rendering of their namesake Greek demigod, and three diamonds reflecting those found on the host city’s crest. A modern classic. Easily my favorite in Dutch football and, in my opinion, one of the best in world football. Honestly, the crests of Heracles Almelo and FC Twente - both clubs from the Twente region of the Province of Overijssel - are my two favorites in Dutch soccer.
I think this just goes back to the parity in MLS. It's easy to be a good player, play on a team where you're surrounded by other top talent at every position and play against weaker sides every week. In Soccer you're judged by how often your team wins. Even if youre a great goal scorer, you can't necessarily constantly create chances for yourself. Sure, could Bernardeschi and Insigne have performed better so far? Of course. But soccer is a team sport. David Beckham learned that lesson before anyone else did, and Miami is winning the shield with Messi playing in only half of their games.
