I have been told by a reliable source that there was an MLS weather person on site that night and that this is standard practice. The decision likely is still made in New York, though

I'm sure the league makes the decision on whether to postpone vs play (LAFC at Houston for instance). But someone local should be making the decision on what time to start warmups or resume play. By the time someone in NYC has considered the factors for all the impacted games, his info will be out of date.

However... The league had an on-site weather personal for the game. I was told he had the authority to start the game, but was reluctant to do anything without hearing from New York.

Nothing official, but I got the feeling the Crew FO was riding him to get updates and the match started, and he froze up and did nothing. Kinda hamstringing the Crew.

What was billed as a good thing having an on-site expert to expedite a potential weather delay, ended up being another middle management road block.

Am I that source? We did have a MLS weather person on site.

I'd be curious to know whether - as one certainly suspects - they paid for someone to fly in from New York (business class or better) and put them up in our best hotel with a nice rental car so that he could go to the stadium and tell somebody in New York something that any idiot could figure out by sticking his head out of a wondow.

How much money could they save by letting the refs, a local AMS-certified meteorologist and existing technology decide whether or not to play? Heck, you wouldn't even need the meteorologist.

I don’t know how pro sports leagues are run, but it wouldn’t shock me if it’s common practice that there is at least some physical presence of league staff at every game in all of them.
