I genuinely like Dan Loney. I mean, yes, the guy is somewhere to the left of Leon Trotsky, feels about America the way Hitler felt about Poland and is a Galaxy fan who singlehandedly flogged that absurd "Victoria Street" name thing long after it was clear no one else was interested. Nonetheless, he's always seemed like an OK guy to me. Bright enough, even insightful on occasion. But this latest CSN screed about the Crew, well, I just don't get it. I mean, I know it's supposed to be zany and madcap and irreverent or something. But I've read it twice and, except for the repetition of various uses of "banana" which strikes me as completely witless, I simply don't understand a word of it. Yes, I know, Columbus is on a mission to prove us all wrong. I'm a little man, Frankie Hejduk is a great man. I should have been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across the silent seas, the middle word of life is "if." Is he on drugs now? Martin Sheen's version, featuring Dennis Hopper as an American hippe/journalist as an updated version of Conrad's unamed Russian, an out-of-time, out-of-place sycophant to the Marlon Brando character, rejects the moralistic White Man's Burden colonialist ethos which permeates the original. It does however effectively reflect the self-destructive/suicidal effects of unlimited power which leads the protagonists to their encounter with the heart of drakness, which is essentially the heart of the human soul. No, never heard of it.

How many of us don't have clean water or enough food? After reflecting on all the sacrifices made by our parents and grandparents it seems like we would cut each other a little slack. A sense of humor is truly needed to read these boards. Politics are part of it. It's a message board, who cares. The main problem I have is that Apocalypse now was an overated piece of bunk. The greatest war movie I have ever seen was Full Metal Jacket because it got beyone that whole "fog of war" crap that was Apocalypse Now. But I only say that Full Metal Jacket was the best war movie beacuse Michael Ciminio's The Deer Hunter, while partly a movie about war was really about so much more and doesn't deserve to be lumped in as a war movie. The Deer Hunter remains the finest piece of film making over the past 40 years. Too anyone who disagrees, I ask, "Why do you hate America?"

Being as though I've been in a slump...and being as though I just went to the Indy 500 for the first time this past weekend I can say that bunny is full of ********. The Indy 500 may be the greatest spectacle in racing, but pvssy is pvssy. So the distortion of facts by Bunny leads me to stick with Full Metal Jacket as the better film.

i just so happened to rent apocolypse now last week. and as it is a weekly rental at the local videotan, i watched it four times. i must respectfully disagree with your opinion regarding AN and FMJ. there also happened to be a trailer for a 'making of' type documentary called hearts of darknes: something something at the beginning of the tape but, unfortunately it wasn't at the videotan. i haven't read that book but it has jumped to the front of my list. if you care to chat about any of the movies discussed in this thread i would be more than happy to as i have seen them all numerous times. however, in the interest of preserving the original topic of this thread, just send me a pm. ps dan loney is a fool.
the deer hunter is a very powerful movie. i wouldn't label it a war movie, neither would i label apocolypse now a war movie. at least not in the same vein as full metal jacket, platoon et al. war definately plays a major role in these (AN, DH) but i don't see it as the most important theme. human nature and internal conflict resolution seem more the focus to me.
I suspect I've seen the basic training part of Full Metal Jacket 25x more than I've seen the entire movie.
