Not a swap (and his name is Cardoso). He is a USA international, 22 yrs old, and is a no 6, what we do need. From Fabrizio Romano: EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham are closing in on deal to agree on priority option to sign Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis in the future! #THFC will also buy a percentage on future sale in case they decide against signing him. It’s part of the deal for Gio Lo Celso to Betis. So we would just get first crack at signing this player. It is s typically Spurs move under Levy. No other big club operates like this. Why don't we just go out and sign a quality player we need, straight up?
Spurs have signed loads of quality players who simply don't always work out. The ones that do have been epic. The ones that don't usually have pretty decent careers elsewhere.
Lo Celso finally gone to Betis. As part of the deal Spurs have priority ("first dibs") to sign Johnny Cardoso from Betis in the future. Never heard of that little twist before. A creative way to make an overpriced player affordable for Betis. Now do Reguilon, please!
6m euros, or some such, prior to factoring in the Cardoso stuff. Better than keeping him around on the bench and him leaving on a free ... but not by much. Really bad business in the big picture. Betis must be beside themselves. A 30m player for the change in the cushions.
I was reading an interview with Ossie Ardiles and he was talking about how some Argentinian players never acclimate to life in England - don't learn the language or engage in popular culture - so they remain unhappy. I don't recall if he mentioned Lo Celso by name, but that was the implication. Put him back in Argentina and he's great, back in England - meh. He thought he would be playing for this cool Argentinian manager, then he wound up with all those other guys instead. Anyway, it looks like the club is taking a different approach to transfers now. Lessons learned, hopefully.
Unnamed sources, but feasible Spurs have been chasing the attacking midfielder for over a year and even had a gentleman’s agreement with Eze, based on meeting Crystal Palace’s £68 million valuation. ‘In fact, Eze’s family was invited by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to attend the last North London Derby at the end of last season, a match Spurs lost 3-2. However, the deal took a sudden twist when Eze’s representatives informed Ange Postecoglou’s side that their rivals had made contact with the England international, urging him to put the move on hold and reassess his options before making a final decision. ‘Following this development, a conversation between Postecoglou and sporting director Johan Lange led Spurs to shift focus. The funds earmarked for Eze were redirected to secure Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke in a £65 million deal, with £55m paid upfront and £10m in add-ons.’
Gee, we didn't sign Eze because he didn't want to join Spurs? Never considered that possibility. In real life, it's not as simple as making a shopping list.
Crikey, have you two got your heads in the sand! We didn't sign Eze because Levy prioritized maximizing his own wealth. Everybody knows this. Do keep up.
A chairman serious about winning would have bought Solanke AND Eze, not a bunch of kids who don't play, and then pass it off as a youth movement. This is why the others win things, and we don't.
I’m really positive about the kids and think we’re building something special. Vuskovic scored his second goal yesterday. It’s of course possible they all end up hitting the same ceiling as Winks, Skipp, et. al., but it’s not inconceivable the starting 26/27 team could have a good deal of PL experience and 8-12 years of prime career left.
